2015 Tokyo Motor Show: BMW 330e hybrid
BIMMERPOST NEWS 2015 Tokyo Motor Show: BMW 330e hybrid Photos of the 330e hybrid at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show. The introduction of BMW eDrive technology in BMW brand models opens up all-electric motoring with zero local emissions to new target groups. The BMW 330e with plug-in hybrid drive is being added to the model line-up of the new BMW 3 Series. It will also be possible to sample the pleasure of all-electric driving with zero local emissions in the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer in future, thanks to the BMW 225xe – the Active Tourer variant with eDrive. They will join the BMW 740e luxury sedan (the plug-in hybrid variant of the new BMW 7 Series) and the BMW X5 xDrive40e in the BMW model family, so that in 2016 the BMW eDrive technology initially developed for BMW i cars will be available for BMW models spanning four different vehicle segments – from the compact to the luxury class. Premium petrol was $2.39 per US gallon here in Houston yesterday. Not expensive enough to encourage me to drive a hybrid anything. Cheap enough to encourage me to drive my bimmer someplace.

As a former AH3 owner, I can agree that the cheap gas has driven down demand, prices and interest in such vehicles. But BMW developed these cars 5+ years ago, so they couldn't really "stop" when the oil prices dropped like a rock. When they first started working on this model, they could have predicted that gas would be $5/gal in 2016, and this car may have made sense. If anything, cars like the 330e will help them design better totally electric vehicles that will be common 10-15 years from now.

you know its going to have a huge premium in price. i understand the technology may be expensive but if you want to move people away from gas you need to make theses options more affordable. the AH3 was way to expensive over the normal 3 and i bet this will be around that price. you will see little adoption here in the northeast with this vehicle. would be nice to use pure electric to and from work every day though as my one way trip to work is 14 miles.

You might miss out on some awesome cars, in the future. My AH3 felt as fast as my E92 M3 at any speed up to about 50mph. Consider that hybrid/electric cars can likely progress the performance bar at a faster pace than cars with an internal combustion engine.

Ok never thought I would say this, but the future is kind of alluring with these types of cars. *spits out coffee* what I mean is.. living in a city that is embracing electric vehicles and crap like this, in addition to heavy federal/state tax credits (for now), this could be great. Especially for commuting. LA roads put a serious physical toll on all cars, and being able to have something like this in the garage could allow you to save serious money. My one-way commute is just under 20 miles right now and having the ability to avoid gas charges when possible would be awesome. I think there's a balance and niche market waiting to be found between economical and sporty .. atleast for commuting in LA.

I work about 13 miles or so from my house. I like it, but to put it simply the performance figures just aren't there for me... Its a BMW after all I wouldn't buy it for the "great gas mileage"

Less stop at gas station, doing a world a favor of stopping pollution, enjoying better (and clean) technology, feeling good for being responsible for environment... Etc. performance wise, high torque is very appreciated.. May be its because Im a financial guy, but I feel great when I could save even a single dollar. With a plug in hybrid of 20 mile of range, virtually I wont be using gas on commuting at all.. |

Ive never been ok with not having sound. And I really actually love the smell of gas when i warm up my car in the morning. In my opinion a car should excite all senses. Hybrids have no smell nor do they make a sound, i find them to be a bit soleless. Opinions normally change over time but if you ask me right now (performance numbers being equal) id take a gas engine over an electric or hybrid. In my humble opinion i dont think we will have to worry about not having a gasoline engine option in our lifetime, probably in our childrens lifetime as well. |

Anyone that thinks fuel will stay "cheap" indefinitely is going to be sorely mistaken. Will it happen tomorrow? Who knows, fuel prices are unpredictable.
Anyone that doesn't see PHEV's and EV's as serious performance contenders are also not looking at the entire picture. Take a look at the latest crop of super cars, there are a few PHEV's in there, instant torque is addicting. I have a REx i3, I last bought gas on 8/14/15. |

I can definitely see M-division employing this technology in the future as battery tech improves so they can keep the weight down.
