charge pipe problem?
Hi guys,
today I have noticed that charge pipe on my 328xi is moving a lot, please see attached video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQfDWQadWF0 As I don't know anyone else who owns a car with 28i engine (I am from Europe.. everybody is buying diesels here...), I can't compare it to other car. I do not think this is OK... Thank you in advance for your opinion! |

Mine is about the same, and I was worried too. But that's normal.
If you're experiencing a drop in boost, it very well could be bad spark plugs. I experienced it in my car since about 52k miles. All of a sudden, it wasn't very smooth, and would only build up to 12 psi in 1st-3rd gears. 15 psi would slowly build in 4th-5th gears. I thought for sure it was a dmall boost leak at my charge pipe or diverter valve. Now, at 60k miles I have changed spark plugs and I get 14.5 psi in 1st-3rd, and an easier 16.5 psi in 4-5th so far. I haven't fully tested on the highway yet. There may still be a small leak somewhere, but the old spark plugs were a huge problem. |

thanks a lot for your reply! I didn't have any boost drop issues, but sometimes I could hear loud "wind" noise under hard acceleration, it sounds like a leak to me.
I forgot to mention, that my car is only 1 year old, with 27k km (16k miles) and it already got 2nd turbocharger (replaced by my dealer under warranty, the old one was making very loud sirene noises...) That's why I am a bit worried... |

Plastic flex and swells under boost. like it literally deforms. So when it's hot out its gonna take longer to contract. as long as the c clips are in. it's fine. if it didn't give and flex it would have burst.
Doesn't mean you need a metal charge pipe that heat soaks more. If your really concern. go get some gold or titanium exhaust wrap. wrap your entire charge pipe. This will insulate the cold side, while reinforcing it at the same time. Win, win for less then $20. |

If you're hearing what sounds like a leak under acceleration, it could be your diverter valve. Unfortunately it's a huge pain in the ass to remove and check. Best bet is to bring it in under warranty and hopefully you can replicate the sound for one of the service personnel.
