Stock, at least in the US, was H. In the US R tires are generally used on light trucks, with S being the minimum rating on family cars, so if you have R they're probably replacements, and might not meet your needs for more than just speed reasons. It's not unusual for other than BMW dealers to re-shod a used BMW for sale with sub-standard/cheap tires.

Check what your local laws are but certainly here in Australia that would be illegal to fit a R-speed rated tyre to a passenger car and would void any insurance in the event of any accident because you are not "maintaining your car in a roadworthy condition". Minimum allowed speed rating here for a passenger car is S or 180km/h (112 mph).

BMW usually sells decent tires but they are really expensive for what they are. If you got it from a dealer I bet they're just fine
