I recently played around with CarPlay on a 2017 X5 and it's impressive. BMW's wireless integration is fantastic (versus USB-only setup in all/most other CarPlay-equipped cars). CarPlay does work better with touchscreen versus iDrive control, so a 7-Series or X5 is ideal. It's a shame it's a $300 option but I think it's worth it.

That's not the case in the States. The only option you need is Navigation (Professional). Enhanced Bluetooth comes packaged with WiFi hotspot on a 3-Series in the States and you do NOT need that option to spec Apple CarPlay.

At present I would bother. I bought and got it refunded because it was pointless. Enabling car play turns off the idrive side of the integration, and vice versa.
The music menu / album art is poor and much better via idrive. |

Thanks everyone. I've been in touch with BMW to clarify and it depends on your production week in the U.K. If your production was from July onwards you will also need Pro Media,ID5 software and one of the following - enhanced Bluetooth (6NW) or Rear seat entertainment (6FR). If your production week was from week 44 (Nov onwards) then you simply need Professional Media (609). Why do BMW offer this as a stand alone option without even advising their customers? I'm sooo annoyed

I have Car Play on my '16 Honda Civic Coupe. I've used it 6 times in 8 months.
It stinks. The native BMW (and Honda, for that matter) systems are much, much better. |

Well, i would say it depends.
I use Apple Music a lot, and for this, Carplay is great! While using normal iDrive you can only play what is in your personal library, using carplay you can listen to apples radio stations, browse the new and for you section and so on and so on. I really like! Apple maps and all the other stuff is not interresting for me. And it works even with head up. |

Thanks all I've just had it confirmed by BMW that mine has ID5 and as such all I needed was professional media which I had already so it will all run seamlessly. Will just have to see what I think it it as I think it seems to be a matter of opinion. Thanks all for the advice though!!!
