BMW service required
Good morning,
The service light for "engine oil" has come up on the iDrive for my car, which is a 3 series, 320d, 2016 with 28000 miles done. Now the last service was done by the previous owner at a non-partner BMW dealer and he changed the engine oil and the filters at 15000. Can anyone advise what service I should be doing to the car now as it is crucial for me to be well looked after in order to minimise the risks of having to pay for really expensive failure later on? I got a quotation from BMW to change the following: Air Filter 13328572522 Diesel Fuel Filter 64119237555 Microfilter 11428575211 Oil Filter Set 83122409031 Screen Wash 83212405948 ENGINE OIL LL04 5W-30 For £629. Is there anything else I should be aware of or any other recommendations? Regards, Florin |

If it's only 28kmi why is service not covered? Also that price seems way to high, is Europe this expensive in general? Oil change and filters should be under $150. If diesel filter is bad already isn't that warranty?

The car has 3 years warranty until April 2019 but it doesn't have a service pack + included which I know in some countries comes as a standard but not in the UK. I don't think the filters go under warranty because they are considered consumables.

Yes, you're being screwed, and not in the enjoyable way. Even with off the wall UK pricing I'd guess a good independent shop would come in at half that price. You don't need to have work done at a dealer to protect your warranty, just be sure what's done is documented and you save the receipts. There are plenty of shops who specialize in German cars, staffed by BMW trained mechanics who make better money working for an indy than for a dealer despite the lower costs. Selling cars has a very low profit margin, so the service department supports the overall operation.

I doubt very much that the fuel filter needs to be changed at only 28,000 miles. That probably involves some real labour costs but is unnecessary.

There's no specific need to have the history updated. You would update the service interval, which is a simple process, and you'd keep receipts for work done/parts and materials purchased to show a potential buyer.

And here in California (United States) my 2017 440i convertible (which I got new from the dealer) has a 4yr/50k mi bumper to bumper warranty and a 3 yr/36k mi service maintenance (oil change, filter change, whatever is considered a "scheduled" item). I remember when my wife had her X5 (around 2005), the service maintenance was 4yr/50k mi just like the bumper to bumper warranty and included consumables such as brake pads (good thing since I had to replace pads every 12k on that X5), windshield wipers, belts).

Service does not transfer over, you are out of pocket now. At least in the USA. |

Service does or it did transfer over for my 1 Series bought 3 years ago. The car had a Service Pack + which I benefit from as the second owner. I booked the servicing with BMW and when I got there they said it's actually free as it still has that package. Now I am not that fortunate with the 3 series.

For a diesels I think you need to replace the diesel fuel filter every 25k to 30k miles. And you might need the newer BMW oil 0w-30 LL-12 FE, part 83212365951.
