Burger Motorsports N55 oil catch can install DIY
Howdy all!
I wanted to share my latest DIY, ESPECIALLY with the "gotcha" that bit me right off. I know say this a ton in the video, but my crank case hose was REALLY fragile and checking the inside of the hose insulation, had been cracked and leaking for some time. I wanted to start to reduce the oil build up into my valves, so installed the BMS oil catch can today. Easy, simple, and can head off or slow down more expensive walnut blasting or chemical cleaning. Yeah yeah yeah, saying it again, make sure to check the health of the crank case hose BEFORE you break it, and your car can get you there and back for a replacement. For a laugh? My stealership wanted $78 for it when I first called.. uh no.. try again. Any questions please let me know!

Good video, watched a handful of yours before....
I'll preface with this, bms makes good product. This catch can is no exception. Good quality can and hose, and reusing the stock hose is ingenious. The problem is this doesn't fit on the f30 chassis. Only the f32. They do have it marketed for the f30, but i bought one and it doesn't work. And they know about it. So if you have an f30 and thinking about this mod. Don't. |

Seems like I should consider replacing that as soon as possible for my 335i. I somehow broke one of the 4 plastic clips for my GF's X3 35i. |

*laugh* Well funny to hear I am not the only one with the hose just exploding.. I was AMAZED on how it just cracked and shattered once I had it off.
I am guessing replacing that should be a regular maintenance kinda thing.

The oil cooler lines on mine completely block it from sitting far enough back to use the mount. Both mine run to the front of the car, where others have one go to the front and one towards the rear. My car is a late 2012 build date, 2013 model year. |

Thanks for posting up the DIY. On my previous vehicle (2015 392 Challenger) this mod was a must. From what I've read through various posts, it seems some people believe a catch can isn't necessary on the N55, while others do.
Curious to see if you think this is necessary or just added it as it "doesn't hurt"

Plus.. found that leaky crank case hose. lol The funny thing is the car honestly sounds different after that hose replacement. Drove the car for an hour after the change, and gut feeling the whole time it sounded slightly different. (not from the can, but the new hose) Cant put my finger on how, but something.

Everything I've read (do a Google search of "BMW N55 walnut blasting") says the N55 doesn't suffer from significant oil build up on the intake valves and that many that have peered into the heads, have seen marginal build-up after 60-80K miles and shops are recommending 100K blasting.
The N55 is nothing like the N54 in terms of this common direct injection issue. I'll be curious to see how much oil you'll be capturing. Here are pictures of a N55 135i with 75K miles prior to and after walnut blasting. There's not much of anything on the exhaust valves at 75K. https://www.1addicts.com/forums/show....php?t=1437656

FWIW... the N20 catches this much every 5k miles. Definitely a much different substance than my last motor which was also DI but NA rather than T.

Interesting.. definite "a lot"? I definitely found residue that I could wipe off with a finger when I changed my CP. (pre catch can)

Umm there was a solid drop on the metal contact in the middle, and the plastic casting below the o-ring was wet. Not like the thing was dripping oil, but definitely damped...
