2016 340Xi Extended Warranty - Negotiation / Pricing?
I have a 2016 340Xi with 33K miles on it, with warranty expiring this Nov.
The dealer quoted me the following for platinum: 72/75K for $4190 - effectively $2095 per year 84/75K for $4690 - effectively $1565 per year. I intend to keep the car for at least 3 more years and have not had any issues so far in 3.5 yr ownership. How much negotiation / wiggle room do i have on these #s to go back and forth. I am thinking of going back and asking for 30% discount, not sure if that's doable or if should i ask for less or more. So wanted to find out if there are others who have bought extended warranty on 340i either from BMW or third party and can make recommendations based on their experience. Also, he offered 2 more years of maintenance for $1895. Thanks for your help -Amit |

If you want to keep the car, then get the extended warranty. When I got my used 2012 E92 335i I went for the extended warranty (even thought it was CPO). A lot of different issues popped up that needed to be handled through the CPO and I believe every time you use the CPO, you get dinged $150 if it is not a coverable expense.

Shop around to different dealers on both items. It doesn't matter who you buy it from, any dealer has to honor a BMW extended maintenance plan / warranty. I bought my extended maintenance from a different dealer for $2k less than my purchasing dealer was going to charge me.

BMW extended warranties have become a lot more expensive. I bought my 5 year / 100k mile warranty for $3000 and I was able to get major items replaced like the transmission. I had a good feeling that I would make good on that warranty because my powertrain is stock and I track the car so my use case isn't the typical use case.
However, I think the pricing for that warranty is now $5000+. At that point, you might as well take that L on a trade in and just get into a newer car. Doesn't make sensor to pay so much for a warranty that you have to have a major end item fail to break even on it. |
