johnung makes a very good point about B58 being a modular engine, or a derivative of 4 cylinder B48 engine with 2 extra cylinders. Why the 5 in B58? It's a mystery.

Having owned both N55 and B58 equipped vehicles, I prefer B58. The power delivery is just perfect.

I've studied this massively before purchasing.... In the end I chose the 2015 n55 strictly due to the fact that it handles better since it's a 100lbs lighter... The car has enough power going fbo and tune for what it is in reality... I never really wanted to stress it to the max for more power it doesn't make sense reliability wise... I go by the theory if you want more power besides basic FBO and tune... spend the money in the beginning by just buying a more powerful car in the first place... hence I'm waiting for the new M3 to come out...

Having owned both, b58 is far superior.

PLeasssse elaborate.... otherwise your statement doesn't mean anything....

I drove both hard before making my decision... I liked the one I have... it definitely wasn't a money issue in my decision... the 340 felt heavier to me anyways... acceleration stock the n55 is faster but that wasn't the decision factor at all either...

So firstly speaking, the n55 in terms of upgrading/mod needs way more mods to bring the same HP numbers as the b58 (n55 would need chargepipe, intercooler and DP).

Secondly, stock for stock I preferred the b58 powerband as the n55 felt SLOWW in lower rpm where youd be driving normally day to day. The b58 powerband is also linear and felt stronger and pulled all the way to redline on b58 (the n55 chokes in the top end) (both me and ALL my n55 friends felt the same). B58 has virtually zero turbolag.

Most importantly the b58 is a stronger and better built engine, it is almost all forged parts besides pistons I believe. Also the closed deck design speaks for itself. Not to mention the n55 rod bearing issue (which my 435i with 40k miles had rod knock with 5k oil changes and no rough driving till engine oil was up to temp).

So thats why I believe the b58 is the beast that it is.

As I stated above the power for the car to me with FBO and tune is good enough... it was all about the handling... Not looking to max out the engines... I believe buying base with simple mods for reliability instead... Dyno and track is totally different... hence more power on stock B58 but slower in the 1/4... i'm not gonna drop $10,000-$15,000 to max out these engines... gonna buy a new M3 when they come out with the money instead...
