Local BMW dealer replaced EGR cooler in my F30 320D M Sport last Saturday, which took nearly 4h. Approx. 50 miles later car lost power and came up with red message on the dash stating drivetrain malfunction. Had my car towed back to the dealer (different one this time) and now waiting for an update. On the upside I’ve been given brand new 2019 320d m sport to drive in the meantime...

Those lights on the rain streaked windscreen made me think the car was on fire for a moment. I was going to say you're a brave man for getting a picture of the screen while the flames raged.

It's my turn
The website said "Remedy Available" for my car and my SA confirmed. Taking it in tomorrow, will probably pass inspection since I havent seen a drop in coolant.

I'm picking my car up tomorrow. It will be interesting to see how many parts were involved with the repair. |

I think he meant to say a drop in coolant level.

I also needed the manifold. Driving home the check engine light came on. They also checked it when there. It will be back there tomorrow morning. Not happy! |

We are buying our F31 Msport out of state and as a result of the parts not being available apparently in the San Fran Area, decided to ship it home instead of the normal Cali to Texas “getting to know you” drive back.
Thanks for the thread, might have saved us getting stranded somewhere since the recall is still open on this one. |

The local dealership finally complied with the recall and now 4000 miles later the engine light came on and the dealership says it's an 'EGR problem'. They want over $600 to run a diagnostics 'smoke' test to determine the cause of the issue. Not happy at all and would like to know if anyone has had a similar problem after having the recall completed. Thanks!

Your dealer might not go by it.. mine didn't and charged me $219 diagnostic charge which was waved when it became clear it was the EGR related (Mine the loose hose they forgot to tighten) recall problem. Maybe it's the loose hose like mine had after they fixed it? I'd get in touch with BMW corporate if it's once again the EGR module. It should be covered. |

Car was towed into BMW on 9/21 after rapid deceleration on the highway going about 75. Had to basically roll it off the road, no power whatsoever. Drive train malfunction and transmission messages and the smell of burning. It was towed to the dealership and just spoke with them yesterday. At first, they said that they didn’t know what was going on and said they’d have to keep it a few more days. Got a call back about 20 mins later saying this had to do with the EGR recall and melting of the manifold. They said it’s covered under my extended warranty. But here’s the kicker. My extended warranty is up 9/30.
I asked what happens in a week or two once they replace the affected parts but something else happens due to the system failure. They gave me the song and dance saying if they can prove it had to do with the EGR recall they will cover it. My question—do I have them fix and then rid myself of future issues with this car? |

It's not covered under your extended warranty, it's covered under the recall. The recall applies whether you have warranty or not.
If something else breaks later not related to the EGR cooler/recall work then it would have to be covered by an extended warranty or out of pocket. So the dealer is correct in telling you that it would have to be proven to be linked to the EGR recall to have it covered under that in the future. Seeing what the failure mode is though (melted plastic intake manifold) it's unlikely that other things down the line are failing. Just make sure they inspect thing thoroughly for extra wear/damage/contamination.

I must assume that the phase of the moon is right along with sufficient slaughtered chickens because BMW claim that the fix is available for the EGR cooler on my F30.
Now, let's see if this holds up after speaking to the dealership. |

As it is a graduating issue, I don't believe for a second that it is a manufacturing defect and some units are not affected. I more believe that they are all faulty and at different stages of failure or not yet failing.
So for the people that get an inspection and a clean bill of health, where does that leave you in 20 or 30k miles? |
