F32 435i transmission issues
Hi all, I own a very low km(15k) 2015, F32 435i. My auto-transmission (ZF8), however, really lets the car down. The 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd changes aren't smooth, and this is particularly worse when cold, but only improves slightly when warmed up. I've had the adaptations reset to no avail. Every now and then the car will shift smoothly in these changes, which makes it all the more perplexing. I've also had the transmission software updated, which again, made no difference. What else can I do? I highly doubt the transmission oil needs changing with such low kms, unless it is insufficiently filled from factory? (again highly doubt it)... it would seem like some of the programming or way the clucth packs are working in sync. I don't know a lot about this transmission or Bimmers in general, but consider myself fairly mechanically savvy. Aside from "take it back to BMW", does anyone have any suggestions with what might be happening here, or have you experienced this yourself? My brothers 330i and cousins 135i as well as a 140i loan car I drove are smooth as butter and share the same transmission... a 4 series should be at least as smooth IMO. Thanks for the assistance.

If the car is in warranty then I’d keep pushing the dealer to investigate and fix.

Apparently BMW updated the software for my entire car back in July. Would this have been pre iStep update you're referring to?
you're right, it's not still under warranty however good chance of goodwill as car has ridiculously low kms. Last edited by petegangies; 11-07-2019 at 05:09 PM.. |

FYI- 2015's resold by BMW as Certified get an extra year of warranty added so they would still be under warranty.

Hence the "FYI" because it was in reference to your comment and not specific to the thread. My Certified 2015 is an example that still has some warranty remaining because of the year added, as would many of the 2015's that came off lease and were then resold as Certified by dealers. Just an FYI...

It's like a "box of chocolates....you never know what you're going to get". Comments on the forum, as well as my own personal experience, have shown improvements. And sometimes unintended consequences. As a result, I update my iStep annually. |

I had a new 2014 335i and the dealer eventually replaced the transmission after several visits. The issue was a delay in between gear shifts most noticeable when going from 2 to 3, or 3 to 4. So with the delay, there was jerk when it engaged...not sure if this is what you're experiencing. Dealer's 1st attempt was to reset adaptation which at first I thought was an improvement, but it came back. Tried some other stuff, including sending a fluid sample for analysis and mechatronics replacement. Finally agreed to replace the complete transmission. Long story...there's a thread here somewhere on this.
I'd take it to the dealer. If warranty recently expired, and it's a serious issue, they may help. BTW, my 2015 warranty just expired last month. |

The only time the transmission hangs a bit in mine is, when parked for long period of time (8hr)
When it grabs the 2nd gear the revs overshoot a bit before it happens. Been like that since I bought it, so I think that's normal. |
