M-Sport Steering Wheel Refurbishment
Hey all - I bought a 2013 335i M-Sport with over 100k miles on it. Now that I've done all the mechanical maintenance, I'm turning to the interior cosmetics.
The steering wheel is really showing its age. The top is rough to the touch from use and exposure to the sun. I've never worked with leather... Do you guys think this wheel could be refurbished by myself or an upholstery shop? Or do I need to get new leather or an Alcantara re-wrap? |

It all depends on your skill set. Many threads here about adding covers, refurbish & redye, or sending off for recovering. Try a search. Good luck!

FWIW - Coby wheel in Georgia will do a REALLY nice job for under $300.
This one they quoted me $275 for textured leather and smooth leather (instead of the alcantara) and the red 12'oclock stripe (which is super handy to have when steering for track schools or autocross or hard driving.) Here's a thread of guys wrapping it. https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1517438 Personally, I'm buying a spare wheel and trying it out myself. Most guys said it's somewhat easy, just takes a few hours. |

Clean it with acetone, which removes the existing surface treatment. Use black dye to restore the color, acrylic protectant to preserve it.

Most of what makes that ugly and gross is oil.
A good leather cleaner like Chemical Guys and a short brissel horse hair brush will make a night and day difference on there. Good condition steering wheels without the buttons or airbag come up here for $150 to $200 all the time and can be swapped out in less than an hour.

Tried Leatherique on my old steering wheel and it turned out pretty well. It wasn't in horrible condition to begin with, but there was a bit of shine at the 3-9 area. Here's the before/after.

It is amazing the turn around you can get with a good leather product(s). Often a steering wheel will look like a lost cause, but a good cleaning and conditioning to remove years of grime and possibly even a bad dye-job will restore it to near-new condition.
