2017 340i xDrive
Hi All,
Am I crazy for wanting to buy/own a 2017 340i (manual) without manufacturers warranty? Or is extended warranty a must with these cars? What's reliability like? Plan is to own it for ~3 years, driving 14-15k per year. I recall my 335xi (e90/2009) had quite a bit of issues in the 3 years I've had it and it was brand new when I bought it Any thoughts/comments would be greatly appreciated! Thanks. -Igor |

We are starting with 80'000miles and no service history? Then I would walk away from it

If the car is sold by a BMW dealer and they have got some "history" for you about the previous owner, I wouldn't see any objections.

My apologies for not being clear - there's still 1/2 year of warranty left but my concern is for the next 2.5-3 years that I will own the car and at that point it will be without warranty... is it silly to hope nothing major will break in the next 2.5-3 years? or is extended bmw warranty a way to go?

Oilchanges. Should be done more often than the intervals recommend.

You can get an extended warranty BUT the cost for a good (comprehensive) one might be $2000+ a year. I am ballparking based on what I'm getting quoted right now. So the question is - do you expect $6000 in repairs over the next 3 years. If you engine blows, that's $6000 right there. If it doesn't, you might come ahead paying for repairs. Ergo, it's a trade-off between uncertainty and piece of mind. That's how I'm viewing this decision now.
Btw, if someone knows of a good warranty and much cheaper, please do tell! |

PenFed credit union offers a good extended warranty - https://www.penfed.org/auto/extended-warranty , price - $2,995 for five years. Anyone can join PenFed. If you go to the membership tab there are instructions on how to become eligible for membership.
OP, a 2017 340i should be pretty reliable for the 45k miles you’d have it. If you bought the PenFed warranty I’d say keep the car for five years, because that’s how long the warranty lasts. If you want to post a link to the car you’re considering we’ll take a look at it and let you know if we see any red flags.

I got my 2016 manual 340i xDrive with 82,000 miles. I'm at 90 now. Not a lot of history. I needed a manual; didn't want xDrive, but now I'm glad I have it--very stable in the rain and I presume snow when I get to driving in it.
No problems but for a battery for the emergency phone. It's much bigger than an old 3-series...and there's more power than you'll be able to use most of the time, but it's nice to know it's there when you need it. On the highways in NJ, power comes in handy to keep away from morons.

Yes, I’ve used PenFed for many years. They have great loan rates and great credit cards. I wholeheartedly recommend them.

I bought my 2016 340 xdrive at 101k miles little maintenance history. Granted I'm a mechanic so I knew what I was looking for. Great car, haven't had a problem yet. I'm at 118k miles now. Take it to BMW for a vehicle inspection before you buy and you should be alright.

Not all 2018s have Apple CarPlay, wireless or other wise. I don’t have it in my car. It’s not available. I checked. I’m still in the free period for connected drive. It works well. If I still have the car when it expires, I may pick and choose what I buy. I certainly don’t need maps every year.
