N26/N20 Engine Replacement: What's Included??
Hi All, dropped off my 2013 328i N26 early last week at the dealer for a minor idle/stutter issue after recently having the dreaded timing chain replacement service done. My advisor was out this week and really hasn't gotten any updates until today when another advisor called me to say "I just wanted to update you; the engine was ordered, covered under warranty, and it's on its way" Ummmm a whole new engine?! I asked how this was needed and he said it was due to the recent service I had with them. Said he didn't know much else and my advisor would give me a call Monday.
I'm still speechless as the car was driving fine besides the idle being a little unsteady when stopped. The car obviously isn't under warranty, but I guess they are attributing poor work done on their behalf or just good-willing it. My question is, does BMW use crate engines for replacement or what is their typical way of handling it? What components are included? I had concerns about the life of the oil pump, and my oil filter housing gasket was starting to leak and wonder if I'll get lucky and these will be included. Any of you that have had a new engine put in or are familiar with the process, I would love to hear your experience! Thanks ! |

I don't have experience with BMW but on a Infiniti G35 the whole engine and accessories mounted on the engine is replaced... Same thing with Nissan Sentra SER. The same with mercedes benz... Engine and accessories.
I hope it doesn't happened to me (knock on wood 1000 x). Especially out of warranty. Good thing this is Under warranty and you don't have to pay. |

He was probably referring to the SULEV warranty, which applies to many cars sold in California. It doesn't cover the entire engine, just the parts related to emissions control.

So those with a build date past 02/15 and non n26 = SOL in regards to timing chain faults, like me

I would have thought the same thing but I have a 2016 N26 and im looking at the SULEZ PZEV Emissions PDF someone else posted and it shows the timing chain listed under emissions related parts which means this part applies to the sulev warranty.
