420D N47 or B47 Performance mods?
Hello everyone,
I'm a new owner of a 420d F36 but owned an e90 years ago (hard to get higher varients in my country). So long story short, I'm installing some aesthetic mods and would like to have some performance mods too but I am not too sure if they're okay to do on diesel engines and with stock turbo most likely. So, this desire to make it look better has moved on to exhaust and therefore I would likely get M kits first before I can install this exhaust that I have seen on Youtube and that shop's near where I live. I would just like some performance to go with its looks. Would just like to ask what safe mods should I go for? What I mean by safe is I don't want to really overdo it like changing turbos. What can I get to go with the Full Turboback Exhaust System seen on the video? Car's photos TIA. Last edited by MonyoF36; 07-28-2021 at 10:39 AM.. |

Which engine do you actually have?
A tune alone (engine ecu reflash) with no other mods can get you +30% extra power. No turbo swap, no other mess.

I’m really not sure. It’s a 2016 non-LCI Gran Coupe and I’ve read it should be B47 but then I read somewhere here that NA doesn’t have B47 but I don’t know where BMWs here in The Philippines come from.
Also, I’ve seen a “Don’t remap your BMW video” from BMW Doctor lol. I’m confused. |

A remap will be one of the most guaranteed ways to get more power from your engine. It can be very safe when done correctly... and even BMW has remaps that they have done themselves (Performance power packs, etc). You will have to decide that for yourself. Youtube has become a platform to give anyone with an opinion a "voice", even ones with zero experience in tuning or how it even works. An exhaust or intake or other mods will not add power, especially on a stock engine where they're not even close to a restriction. In a diesel, fuel (plus adequate air to burn it) is what adds power.

Yes, check your VIN at realoem.com or bmwfans.info
At least in Europe, N47 was replaced by B47 in 2015. https://www.celtictuning.co.uk/news/...engine-for-eu6 Easy and safe Stage1 remap would give extra 30hp pretty cheaply. |

Thank you for the replies.
It's N47N as seen here: I will start to look around for tuning services in my area tomorrow. What else can I add? Some intake maybe? Though, I read that stock turbo might throw a code because of imbalance of some air intake. If it's good, I'm open to adding those up. Also, headers? Just something that probably will go well with the Full Turboback Exhaust System. |

Where are you reading all this? Note that making power on a diesel vs. a petrol/gasoline car is very different.

In a very general sense:
Gasoline engines are air throttled (meaning that the amount of air ingested determines how much fuel will get injected and therefore how much the engine is energized). Gasoline cars must stick to a very narrow air to fuel ratio (AFR) or else the engine runs poorly or unsafely. Diesels are fuel throttled. Diesels do not adjust fueling up when there is more air. Diesels often run extremely lean, such as 100:1 AFR at idle without any issues. Generally, ramming more air than necessary into a diesel does nothing. For diesels, adding intakes and other stuff is more often a waste of time when considering power. For example: Let's say your diesel engine is ingesting almost 100% air (it always is, there is no throttle body), and it's fueling at 40mg per stroke at that max accel pedal level. You will make the power for 40 mg of fuel. Then you find the most advanced, best intake and you can now breathe a few % more. The car will still fuel 40mg / stroke of fuel. The effect? Nothing.

Stage 1 remap with existing hardware in place is my vote.
No need to hack off exhaust system components. Put another way, the stock exhaust is not restricting flow. Save your money and just get the tune done (properly).

Not sure if it's available overseas, but the KermaTDI tune doesnt require any hardware mods to the car. Stage 2 may be US only as it requires a loaner laptop, but Stage 1 looks doable.
