Hi all,

Can someone offer an opinion, I have a 2015 435D coupe and despite the general view being its a great driving car my personal is thats its really not that good, with harsh ride, shoddy build etc. Sytner provided me with a 440i Gran Coupe whilst my M6 was being serviced, it was virtually a new car with a few thousand miles on the clock and drove completely different to my 435d Coupe, ie a much smoother ride despite mine being fitted with non-RFTS.

Appreciate you cant compare a diesel to a petrol, but I wondering is the GC tuned / set up differently to the coupe, I thought the saloon, coupe, and GC are the cars same underneath, but the drive of the GC make me think otherwise, or perhaps I have dud 435d

Not driven either but your 2015 4 series is a pre facelift and therefore a number of changes could have been made up to now, facelift in 2017 I think.

Perhaps, what ever the changes were they've worked, my main gripe is the firmness of the suspension which borders on unacceptable in my view

If the GC was on stock 18 inch wheels, even with run flats, the ride is very compliant and far from harsh.
I spec'd 18's on mine for just that reason. I want comfort and the trade off in cornering roll on the few (!) occasions I drive in a very spirited fashion was worth it.

There were suspension revisions when the LCI Coupe was launched. I drove a few pre-LCI Coupe’s before driving an LCI when I was looking and there are massive differences in terms of ride comfort with an LCI car - even on 19”s.

Yes I agree the pre-lci drive totally different even with 19"s

This is the major difference between an Xd and an Sd, plus add in the substantial LCI changes and the two cars you mention are quite different. I changed to ACS springs on my '15 pre LCI 330D Xd and that improved things considerably although it was still seriously under-damped. I passed it to my son when I bought my '18 440i GC (adaptive susp.) and it was chalk & cheese, a far superior ride, lighter steering, good initial turn in but a tendency to understeer into small roundabouts whereas the 330D Xd just hauled you around. We both still enjoy both cars.

Edit: Both on 19" 's.

Your comments on your previous '15 330xd match mine with my '15 435xd.

How is the damping on your '18 GC with adaptive suspension? Is it underdamped in any way in Comfort? How about harshness over smaller imperfections?

I'm wondering if the later (LCI) dampers are a direct fit and would fix my issues...

Hi, the GC isn't (IMO) underdamped in comfort and is quite smooth and comfortable on the awful roads in the Lakes. In sport there's a degree of harshness on back roads but the adaptive is much smoother in sport than the non-adaptive Msport set up I tried before deciding the adaptive was the way to go for local road conditions. Typically I leave the susp. in comfort and the drivetrain in sport.

I have an LCI F32 440i without adaptive suspension running Goodyear run flat tyres on 19” wheels & I cannot fault the ride quality, defo down to the LCI tweeks in my opinion

I'm test driving a pre-LCI F36 with adaptive suspension this weekend. Coming from an LCI non-adaptive (long story) - am I likely to find significant differences in the ride comfort?

When I bought mine 430d m sport pre lci I was thinking the same, car just feels to harsh and stiff, don't help I'm on 20" alloys at the moment, drives great when on motorways ect. but some A and B roads can be a bit tricky, everything comes down to preference as I prefer cars to feel bit more stiffer but then there is to stiff and poor suspension respond and when you go a bit faster the car proves to be a handful, sort of like skids over bumps but this is when you go bit more then national speed limit , best way I can describe feels like someone fitted cheap coilovers and at first I was thinking is all in my head but then drove 3 series m sport on 20" and car felt lot smoother, might have to look different suspension setup for my current car in future as I already tried 18" and 19" alloys but been honest the 18" felt smother due to tire sidewall but I couldn't tell the difference from 19". I'm not sure what is the technical term but there is very little response for small bump in the suspension setup for pre lci cars.

I’m currently driving a 17 420d gc while mines in for service. And My gf used to have a 420d 16 and the gc does ride nicer, it’s still coupe-like in terms of handling but softer and more refined. Doesn’t feel heavier too.
