Definitely rubs me the wrong way. I understand paying for live traffic updates or something that uses data, but there's literally no service being provided for something like a heated seat/steering wheel, especially if the hardware comes standard. I'd pay for the addition of hardware but I'd never pay for software to unlock the hardware. Seems morally wrong and If that's how BMW wants to do business I'll either hack the car or buy something else.

Agree with you. The larger picture seems to be that car makers are turning into service providers like Apple. Apple's revenue used to be almost entirely from selling hardware (phones, tablets, MACs, etc) then during the last few years service revenue (iTunes, apps, etc) is a large portion.
Now you buy a car for $50K and will pay a monthly Internet/remote start/heated seats/hotspot/PDS/FLA/etc fee as if renting luxury condo. |

Maybe it is marketing trick to see customers reaction.
If reaction is good or neutral, they will send it otherwise, I think that they will cancel idea about subscription |
