F31 to F81 M3 Touring (Build Thread)
Hey F3x Pals –
Folks from the F8x sub-forum suggested posting here. I'm in the early stages of converting my 2016 F31 328xi into a fully fledged 2018 F81 M3 Touring. Factory Specs: 6MT / RWD Comp & Exec Packs Full Leather Working to document as much as I can in some weekly youtube episodes here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCi8...LVuZzYvwGewezg Also on Instagram (@TouringM3) https://instagram.com/touringm3/ Here are some catchup pics of the big progress so far (well ahead of the video series, of course), and if this is interesting i'll keep this thread updated a couple of times per week with progress and any new video releases. Pics:

Definitely not rich, hopefully not stupid! Thankfully lots of fellow BMW enthusiasts, and those who have already done this are helping me to not screw it up!

Hey buds –
I got the latest episode all edited, where I strip down the entire F31 interior. I had to figure out so many things when it comes to the wiring harnesses, and how the hell they actually pass through the firewall. It felt pretty great stripping my first car, and i hope you all like the vid! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2U5cJfAGHGg

Hey All –
Edited and posted the latest video – starting to strip down the 2018 M3 and swapping a few parts over to the F31 chassis. TONS of learning and discoveries in this vid, and hopefully some improved flow and edits. Check it out, let me know what you think, and if you dig it, share! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nE5XJaQTRg4

This is sick! Great fkn build.
My only question is, is this still on the f30 chassis vs the f80 chassis. Like, will it still handle mainly like an f30? Just curious. Either way, this is cool and a great way to have spent the last year of lockdown |

I'll be making all of the (slight) structural updates to the F31 to be as identical to a F8x as possible. The vast majority of the unibody is identical. Clearly the panoramic roof and tailgate areas are different I'll be welding on 4 points of reinforcement up front for the subframe and strut tower bracing, and adding a couple of additional holes for the strut bar where it anchors way back on the outside of the firewall, basically by the side mirrors. The rest of the reinforcement and bracing is on the underside of the car, from the large chassis stabilizing belly pan, to the rear / side driveline triangulation stabilizers. And they all bolt right up! I'll probably do one full dedicated episode to the differences in each chassis while they're both stripped, and show what it takes to reinforce the F31 in the same way as the F8x came from the factory. I could NOT do this without the insight and coaching from 63NP, Kam (F81_Project) and my mechanic buddy Ryan at Dynasport. I'd have no clue about half of this shit!

Got the car back from the body shop on Monday, and immediately got to work fitting the RWD transmission tunnel floor + longitudinal support brace (driver's side only).
Also, while my buddy was fixing a million spot weld holes, i got to work on the hybrid rear bumper supports. You have to combine the M3 support (in white) with the tail light pocket contour of the F31 wagon – both to make the bumper fit, and to match the lines of the tail lights. (The lights are the same in each car, but in a slightly different location)

It's done, you can follow him on instagram. I talked to him in the comments and he said he's got a lot of footage just needs to put it together. Hopefully he starts posting on YouTube again. There is another F81 on instagram being built in London that's got some great pics of how they did the rear bumpers and fenders.
