I love Harry, I’ve been an EVO subscriber since the 2nd year, but I think a lot of these aging British auto journalists (the same that criticize that BMWs don’t still have the same grill as 30 years ago) are sounding more and more hollow in their arguments.
BMW has made an effort to make the construction of an iX 45% less carbon emissions than a regular X5. It’s also getting me 3 and up mi/kwh in anything but freezing temps. It’s a super efficient car compared to its ICE counterpart. Telling people to keep waiting for battery tech years and years from now, those same people will be saying that in 8 more years. There are some really great regular EVs out now and there are going to be some great EV sports cars coming soon. Time for people to embrace that. |

Drink the Kool-Aid much? I am kidding. This kind of EV discussion is probably not the best venue to have it in given that this is an ICE M specific forum. Edit, It eventually becomes a giant pissing match amongst those that are in favor of EVs and those that are not. Last edited by T_U_D; 01-13-2023 at 04:00 PM.. |

This is a thread about EV M cars where people are dismissing them outright. As a person who’s recently bought my 7th new M car, I’m fully planning to buy an M EV and don’t car if they never make another ICE M car after the new M2 generation.

The next Gen M5 will be a mild hybrid while still fully relying on the new S68 V8. ICE is far from dead at BMW M. https://www.bmwblog.com/2022/11/15/n...epower-report/ Last edited by T_U_D; 01-13-2023 at 06:48 PM.. Reason: Added link |

I'm saying, there have been some recently great new EV products (Hyundai Ioniq 5 and BMW iX come to mind) that are just better in almost all facets than their ICE counterparts. So I personally have alot of optimism for EV sport cars. Porsche for example, has a target weight to keep the 718 EV under 3650 pounds and the Mission R is 3300 pounds. With the instant torque and weight distribution of an EV, that could be a really exciting car. BMW M seems to also have a focus on producing some exciting products in this space. |

Everything runs out including life, the sun, everything. Oil sure as hell can run out to the point there’s not enough to power houses, cars and everything else that still uses it on earth.

what are the other 6100 lbs?!? I guess large SUVs like a Suburban weigh in around that but Im sure theres still atleast 1000+ lbs of engine/drivetrain weight that wouldnt be there? will be curious to see what the EV cayman weighs and if Porsche can figure out how to keep the weight down. I have 0 interest in a car that size thats 4000+ lbs.

Progress. I’m all for it. Let’s rage as in, drive performance EVs like they were stolen.

As much as it scares me having BMW move away from their signature straight 6, I’m curious to see what they’ll do with EV tech, same for Porsche. I used to be fully against EVs but since owning a Tesla consider me a ‘convert’. I just wish we could have options for both - an M2 EV and M2 ICE. Imagine having the flexibility to choose, similar to having the choice over AT or MT nowadays. One can only dream 🙂.

It’s clear some “enthusiasts” will move kicking and screaming to EV M products, while others will readily embrace change. After over 100 years of ICE reign, certainly passions are high and nostrils are flared at talks of its demise.
It’s not just progress, some hidden agenda or the environment that are vectors of change, it’s also our innate and irresistible urge as humans to improve and innovate. What would have happened to the leap from steam power to the ICE without those forces at play? We all romanticize what is familiar and dismiss the unknown, we sometimes gawk at change as some evil agent sent to destabilize the neat little boxes we make into our perfect world, but the truth is change IS the only constant and as a community of car enthusiasts, it’s that very change that has given us so many of the cars we know and love. We are at the cusp of a new era for the automobile and some of our most beloved cars are changing too and that can be sad, scary and deflating. The posters we had on walls of Lambo’s, Vette’s, Mustangs, etc.., of roaring gas guzzling V8’s with a manual and no nanny’s will be replaced by new electric cars. But the very things that made us into car nuts are the very things that will help us embrace this brave new world. I am confident that neither Porsche or BMW or any performance car mark wants to intentionally dilute their brand or let down the very customers their success depends on. Therefore, I am optimistic, if not excited for what is to come, for the next big leap. Change is inevitable. Let’s give these EV’s time to develop, to improve, to break old norms and open new hearts! Who knows, maybe one day an M2 E-Power poster will end up on that proverbial wall.

I feel sad for the younger generation. No matter how fast EVs get they are boring AF. No shifting, no exhaust sounds, no soul. The only silver lining is Porsche is working on e-fuel which is carbon neutral and would let them continue to make ICE cars well into the future.
