Coolant temperature at 105 Celsius
Hello everyone!
I have a 320i F30 N20... Since BMW does not show coolant temperature on the Instrument Cluster I was monitoring it on BimmerLink and saw my coolant temperature going above 100C. It mostly happens on high speeds. In the city it sits around 90C. I also noticed on BimmerLink that there is a "Target Coolant Temperature" which sets a target of 111C after speed reaching 60 km/h. So when in high speeds both oil and coolant stays around 105C,. sometimes going to 110C. When a I reduce speed coolant goes to 90C immediately. Is that something normal? I'm worried about running engine above 100C. Thanks Last edited by tomazprocopio; 02-13-2023 at 09:20 AM.. |

No need to worry, over 100C is good for optimum running and efficiency!
I assume you have an N20 engine variant. If so... ECT is regulated as below. Quote:

You get more power out of the engine at lower coolant temps, but you sacrifice efficiency / mileage since fuel atomizes better at higher temperatures.
The car does dynamically adjust based on your driving style and engine demands. You are all good! In old muscle cars days, 95C was the normal thermostat, and for better performance you could swap in a 80C unit. In winter you quickly learned that 15C in coolant temperature impacts your heater core output! |

Normal. On the highway at fairly constant speed the computer sets the temperature above 100C, for maximum efficiency. At lower speeds and/or when the car is alternately accelerating and decelerating it lowers the temperature, to reduce the risk of pre-ignition.
