Driveline fluids DIY service?
Looking to do a fluid change myself on
- 6mt - front diff - rear diff - transfer case The first three look pretty straightforward , just the old fill and drain plug. Transfer case looks to be more of a pain, I don't think I'm going to remove it I might do four or five partial changes on it using a siphon. I had a shop to the first three at 30k and I'm at 75, so about time. While I'm in there I might try the transfer case. I'm getting a weird little wobble from the left front under acceleration rarely, i don't like it, feels like the diff. It's a walk feeling. Any tips from anyone who's done any of this, and what fluid do you all use, and how much. I think OEM is probably not what I want, I want the good stuff. Thanks in advance |

I am with you regarding fluid changes and do not buy that BS from BMW about lifetime fluids.
Fluid changes are reasonably straightforward, except the transfer case. I used a small (maybe 1/8” id) hose and fished it as far as I could, then used gravity. Was able to remove close to 500ml and used OEM fluid albeit a bit pricey. The only challenge to the TC is that the large support bracket needs to be removed and a support placed under the engine or trans, seemingly simple but just a bit tricky to reinstall. A lift is very helpful. |

So I just completed this maintenance on my 18 340 xdrive
I used OEM fluid from FCP euro, along with new fill plugs the only difference for me is I’m a ZF8 I bought a cheap fluid extractor from Amazon, it comes with two hoses, I also went to a parts store and bought a 12 inch 3/16 copper brake line, cut the flares off and bent it to allow my to get as far into the transfer case and rear diff I could get as the don’t have drain/fill plugs like the front diff does I was able to get about 700ml out of the transfer case, and I used a trick I learned here and didn’t drop the transfer case mount or anything I used a threaded rod coupler nut from homedepot and bent some heat shielding, used the brake line to get nice and deep like in the transfer case. It prob took 20 mins to do the service on that Same on the rear diff, used the fluid extractor On the front diff make sure you can get the full plug loose before you drain the fluid! All in all it’s prob 1.5 or so hours and it will cost you about 500 in fluid Dealer sells the diff services alone for 379 each around here so you’re already saving money and you get to do your own work! |

Thanks guys. I've seen that brake line trick. Not sure what you're doing with a threaded rod and heat shield, can you link me?
I'm getting the clutch torque codes all the time now, so it's all coming apart. I'm going to be down there... I might replace the driveshaft too. |

Not using threaded rod, the coupler nut that joins two thread rod pieces together, read that DIY that will paint it better than I can!! |

This is a good page https://www.bimmerworld.com/BMW-Tran...ferential-Oil/
This tool plus the normal syringe pump https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...-euro-b3300000 The 340ix trans is the GS6X45BZ k type. Transfer case is the ATC35L. For the capacities, 340ix 6spd: Mt: approx 1.2L Rd: 1.2L Fd: 1.2L Tc: less than 1L As far as what to run, TIS says: Mt: 8322239654 mtf-lt-5 oe pentosin 1052107 Rd: 83222295532 BMW hypoid G1 Fd: 83222413511 BMW hypoid G2 Tc: 83222409710 dtf-1 oe shell tf0870 The diff oil is $65 for .5L. It must have gold flakes in it. Have to buy two. I suspect it's because of that "lifetime" nonsense. Per the page above I went with one bottle of the genuine bmw transfer case, two bottles of the pentosin mtf-lt-5, two bottles of the redline 75w90 for the front, and 75w85 gl-5 for the rear. Should be good |
