I have a 2018 440 recently the Idrive keeps restarting randomly while driving and the Navigation constantly says loading. When the Idrive restarts I hear what sounds like a disk drive starting/stopping. I've tried the power button reset and unplugged the battery for 30 minutes.
I think the hard drive is toast at this point.
I have been wanting to upgrade to something with android auto for a while. I'm curious if I purchase an Android Head Unit would I be able to not worry about the faulty hard drive?
I dont know much about the pro's & cons or technical details of this situation and would really appreciate any insight you fine folks could provide.

if the idrive is rebooting then that will cause the droid screen to reboot as well - get the hdd replace then upgrade as you wish but first, you must replace the hdd

Many are not happy with the quality of the Android Screens. Do you research and look at some units in real life in different light conditions if possible.

Regardless, you still need the HD replaced

The Android doesn't care if the HU is on or not, as long as there is power supplied to the HU. However it probably won't be able to read the iDrive controller since it needs the HU for that. But you still probably want to replace your Harddrive regardless.
