Custom Tune Experiences - Cary Jordan

Hey guys,

I wanted to post about my experience working with Cary Jordan last fall, but didn't get around to it at the time so I thought now would be a good time to review my experience as I am just wrapping up my second custom tune with Jordan Tuning.

Last fall I engaged Cary and his team to help me dial in my 2017 340iX after being rather underwhelmed with the BM3 OTS Stage 2+ map post upgrade of my HPFP (Dorch Stage 2) and Turbo (Vargas GC). I did a lot of homework and read about tuners for weeks on end before deciding to bite the bullet and go with Jordan -- his services are not cheap, and there are several negative reviews out there, but I took the leap of faith. You can't please everyone, right???

Within 24 hours I had a base map downloaded that literally transformed the car in every way possible. I didn't get a chance to dyno the car prior to getting the custom pump gas tune with the OTS map, so I can't say for certain what the delta in power was, but I would venture a guess that it was a up at least 60 whp/80 wtq based on a number of variables. Over the course of the next few weeks while I awaited a dyno session spot, I would upload logs and receive new improved maps every 24-48 hours ... outstanding communication and top notch customer service. We ultimately ended up putting down 508 whp and 570 wtq on 24 PSI with 93 octane with a very conservative tune and zero timing corrections (the car is my daily driver and so I need it to be reliable every day to get to work).

Fast forward to this March .... I hired Cary again to help me dial in an E85 map. Same process, same level of customer service and attention to detail. Everything was going smoothly until I blew a lower rad hose the day of my first scheduled dyno session 3 weeks ago .... time is money for these guys, and I felt horrible, but he didnt blink an eye and slotted me in the next available spot, which was this morning. Disaster struck again ..... this time around the shop I had booked dyno time with was 2 hours late getting my car strapped down, and so once again I put Cary in a tough spot .... instead of losing his cool he was extremely understanding, and went out of his way to fit me in despite being fully booked all day with back to back client sessions. After a few pulls my car was misfiring up top, and instead of going home he stayed at work late to review logs and help me diagnose a coil issue I'm having with the car. He's also offered to help me re-dial in the car once I get my new coils in.... needless to say, I'm very very happy with my experience and grateful to be working with someone who genuinely cares.

This guy is a true professional through and through. Highly highly recommend working with Cary and the Jordan Tuning team. He's the best of the best and you'll be in great hands.

Awesome, im glad to hear that you are happy with their level of service!!

My experience with Cary is identical to your first tune with Cary. Base map changed the car completely, then I got updated maps quickly to fine-tune it.

Not sure if I'm allowed to post logs as I believe its proprietary but happy to post the dyno runs of my car misfiring at 5K rpms ... cutting out at 5K car is making over 530 whp and 670 wtq!!

Would you say you're fairly happy with the Vargas GC?

I'm not fairly happy, I'm thrilled. Look at how fast the power comes on with this thing ... it's almost like a stock turbo, but it pulls like a freight train. My 93 octane map is quite similar but obviously less torque and power ... now I'm running 4 degrees more of timing advance and 4 psi more of boost, so should be able to get to around 600 whp once I get new coils swapped in and can get past 5K rpms. Keep in mind I'm also in Calgary with higher elevation.

That's sweet. I've been really trying to decide on which turbo to get, but I really don't want to spend a lot of money. Which I know is kinda counter productive. But the price for the GC is so hard to beat, and I'm not trying to make 700 whp. So I honestly might send it.

I was in the exact same situation as you .... I decided to go with the VTT GC because it was less than 50% of the cost of the Pure 800 here in Canada. I got it on sale and paid $1,300 USD. My goal was to have a car that could make more than 500whp on pump 93 for driving around town, with upside for running ethanol, and I found that happy medium. I'm sure I could make more peak HP running a Pure or DAW, but those cost 2X as much, and my car is the definition of a daily driver ... I drive it to work and back on weekdays (30 miles per day) and the wife takes it to get groceries on weekends. Car acts and drives like its 100% stock ..... yet its making 530whp and 670 wtq ... you would never know.

Per dollar spent there is nothing even close to the VTT GC.

There’s knock in all of them which surely isn’t ideal but I have no idea what I’m looking at.

I appreciate it won’t help you but would be good to see what to look out for from someone who knows.

I have a Vargas GC sitting in the box and will be doing a custom tune myself… curious if you did 3 logs/pulls back to back without checking them or sending to the tuner? I would think the right way is to do 1 log and send/wait for an adjustment or feedback from the tuner. Or was this 3 back to back revisions?

Your Pisten broken in the first Log or bevor!
See my comment https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...48722&page=185

Yeah, I agree franksidebike, your tuner missed a lot of warning signs... but uh, I don't like pointing fingers, but so did you, sanczo17@wp.pl.

You should have felt what was going on during these pulls. Not to mention, with all that knock, you should have had a CEL.

Not really too much else to say about it that wasn't said in the other thread. Just everyone needs to be weary of tuners. This guy could be great... but, in this instance, he missed some pretty obvious warning signs.
