My vehicle currently has F020-15-11-505
What benefits would I potentially realize by upgrading to one of the newer, more recent options? Are there any negatives to upgrading like lost coding or tuning functionalities? Last edited by sspade; 02-01-2022 at 06:10 AM.. |

Sometimes it's big improvements, others, very small things that you won't see. For example:
Auto gear box improvement, smoother gear changes (in case you have an auto) New layout in idrive Smoother tach in cluster, less lag Faster comfort access when locking/unlocking car Electric tailgate smoother close Those kinds of things, depends on the version, model etc There's always a risk but if you follow the correct procedures, it's a small risk. |

Potential benefits:
- Bug fixes - Safety (Warranty) related improvements (e.g. introduction of rev limited) - Enhanced functionality and support of newer external devices (e.g. bluetooth, support of newer phones and improved integration, etc.) Do not expect truly "new" features. That's not the goal here. (Potential) disadvantages: - You will most certainly lose all your coding or at least most, of the affected modules. You will need to recode afterwards. - DME lock preventing future OBD tuning (not sure it applies to your engine)

See my post here
Although with such a old build of F30 (from 2011), some of these fixes might not be applicable.

There are resources online to get a better idea of the fixes between a 2015 I-Step and current. Dont expect brand new functions like a Tesla, but expect bug fixes and improvements.
From what I remember, the DME lock only occurs on the B58 engine. So your N55 should be unaffected. I believe some 2016 cars need a I-Step upgrade anyway for the 3G sunset this month, so you may be in for a free ride if your car qualifies.

Last time I checked, 2-3 hours of labor, plus cost to repair any consequential damages from a failed programming. It's not a warranty or standard maintenance item. The only way you can get a free update is when it's associated to a covered repair like a steering rack swap, iDrive controller replacement, or SIB like the one for the evaporator temp modification.

Reviving an old post...
Been contemplating I-level update for a while now (even built my own PSU to do it). I will be using ISTA+ with ENET. However, some concerns: Current: F020-15-07-506 Target: F020-21-11-510 1. Risk of something going wrong (bricking an ECU) 2. Having to use E-SYS afterwards for re-coding retrofits 3. Other things to consider?

Maybe because it may lock his DME, if he is updating all ECUs…
