340i with the Track Handling Package didn’t come with LSDs. I believe on the full M-Performance 340i came with an LSD, a special limited production model that’s pretty rare. Otherwise an OEM LSD is offered as a port install.

The track and handling package doesn't come with an LSD. The M Performance cars in Canadia came with an LSD but that's about it. The THP comes with an extra oil cooler, the bigger blue brakes and adaptive suspension.

My understanding and correct me if I'm wrong is that the BMW M Performance LSD was not available in the xDrive models (at least in the US). When I inquired about it with BMW as a potential retrofit I was told it was not compatible with my 340i xDrive. The xDrive model has smaller half shafts, smaller wheel bearing carriers and I believe the drive shaft is different as well.

I believe that you'll need to find a rare ZHP optioned car if you want a 340i with a factory installed LSD in the USA.

That kinda sucks. A part of me wants an LSD but it's not high on the list of mods. Touching on another comment, the ZHP only came as the 435 in the US. A factory installed LSD 340/440 you will have to look for a limited edition Canadian M Performance model. Last edited by eff32fl; 05-18-2024 at 10:16 PM.. |

The only factory LSD on US 340s came in 2018 with ZHP package. 75 manuals and 25 automatics. All RWD with 704 suspension. And MPPSK. No big brakes.
In Canada this was known as M performance package 1 and M performance package 2. Both together gave you MPPSK, Track pack. Big brakes. Most of these were AWD so no LSD. But if you find a Canadian RWD with both MP1 and MP2 it could have LSD. |

As far as I know the MPPK items below can still be ordered but they are really no big deal. I cannot recall off the top of my head if these three things or maybe two were bundled as a BMW part number, etc. Doesn’t really matter now. MPPK TUNE- is a dealer installed, super expensive tune with slightly higher boost levels than stock. Also comes with an M Performance badged plastic engine cover. Nothing special. A Bootmod3 Stage1 tune blows it away for a fraction of the cost. M PERFORMANCE INTAKE- is a different intake airfilter box and the air pipe that goes across the top of the radiator has an M Performance badge on it. It takes the same stock size air filter. Main difference is that it has an extra air hole on the bottom of the airbox that faces forward and is trimmed in red plastic. It’s biggest effect is allowing some additional turbo spool sound out. The bottom of the MPI air box can be ordered and installed. See photo. Or extra air holes can simply be cut in the correct location on the bottom of the stock airbox. See photo. It’s the grille facing side that’s not visible when the hood is opened anyway. Actual extra small bump in performance (<5%) isn’t really gained from the extra air hole. But install a free flow airfilter such as an aFe Pro Dry and your butt dyno will feel a slight gain. See photo. M PERFORMANCE EXHAUST- is an axle-back muffler usually with larger chrome tips (carbon fiber tips optional) It does sound great. It’s my second favorite. But I wouldn’t buy it new. I’d buy the AWE axle-back exhaust which is the best that I’ve ever heard for this car. |

If you happen to hear that they don’t make LSDs for XDrive, that’s inaccurate too. Often the history gets forgotten but it’s important to understanding why something is the way it is. The original design for a M Performance LSD was probably done around 2010-2012. Remember that it listed for ~$2,500 and most of the 3-Series sold in Europe were RWD. Anyone who tracked a 3-Series at that time in the US was probably RWD. So German engineer/designers assumed that the aftermarket customer who would pay that much for a 3-Series LSD would be an enthusiast who owned a RWD. All of the marketing and technical documentation was written back in that timeframe and never updated to include XDrive, even if an LSD part number like the one in my particular car fit both RWD and XDrive equally well. Since BMW has to deal with such things as TUV and other European certifications, it’s a logical guess that they never wanted to go through any hassle or expense to officially include XDrive. My guess is that the Germans were surprised that so many XDrives were being sold in the US and probably even more surprised when people began to track them. Below is what I think you are referring to, but it probably got whispered down the lane so many times that it’s become misinformation. In 2019 for some still unexplained reason BMW held a worldwide firesale on one specific LSD part number. They sold out all of this part number that listed for over $2,000 for a little over $600. It was BMW part# 33107555607. It fit F30/F32 335i/ix and 435i/ix with automatic transmissions. See photo of it being installed in my car. There are still BMW M Performance LSDs available for a variety of BMW model configurations. Here’s a link to some of them. https://www.getbmwparts.com/c-differentials-92 |
