I just bought another OE type oil filter cap and stole the cage from it to put in the billet one.

New cage arrived, and the new cap is installed. The cage did take a mallet hit, wouldn't go in otherwise. Went for a few drives, did some pulls and so far it seems to hold. I will report back if and when it reoccurs, or post anyway if this solves it. Something tells me the cage was already broken on the old one..

Cap area has been dry ever since installing that aluminum cap, but something tells me the cage was the culprit.

I don't see how, even if not fully seated it shouldn't have caused a leak, which now seems to have occurred between the cap and the housing.

I don't know, the way it shot the bottom out when I finally got it off was weird. Why did it have so much tension, and why did I keep getting VANOS codes on cold starts. Just a hunch it somehow messed with oil pressure.

Today I checked under the hood, and looks like a few drops have oozed out at some point. It was already caked in and brake cleaner wiped it off, so it had come out on an earlier drive. I just don't know what else to do than change the entire housing, but given it leaks a few drops occasionally, I should probably just ignore this? If the oil comes from that spot, I don't think there's anything important just below it where it could harm something. The belt is not on that spot at least. I just don't get it. If the housing had a crack near the cap, why would it leak out a drop or two once every two weeks and then just be fine again. Although, I'm running 0W40 again, maybe I should go back to 5W40 with the new cap.

Haven't seen any drops since my last post. I'll finally mark this as solved, and hope it doesn't bite me when I say it out loud. Looks like the aluminum cap was the answer.
