I have a 2019 340i GT, and thinking of replacing the battery this summer, just as a preventive maintenance (I know i could probably squeeze more time out of it, but why not take care of it now?)

My battery is a 900A, 900CCA VRLA/AGM battery made by Varta.

I thought about replacing mine a few years ago because it's the original battery and I've never gotten much more than 5 years out of any battery, but it's still going strong after 8 years.

I have a monitor/USB outlet similar to BillFitz and I hook up to a battery maintainer if the car will be sitting for more than a day or 2. When winter is closer I'll keep an eye on it.

I hear you guys on replacing the battery early - this is my only car for the family and I need it to be as reliable as possible.
I do have a battery tender but only use it about 4x a year to maintain the battery when I get a chance to do a full trickle charge for awhile.

I figure I can do it in the spring/summer when the weather is nice, or fumble through it when it’s 25 degrees and snowing in my area. Maybe I’ll get a monitor and wait another year if it’s still going strong!

Save the $200, take the wife and kids out to dinner. Philly isn't cold. New Hampshire is cold. I only drive at most one day a week in winter. This last winter I put it on the charger a total of four times, and then only as a cautionary measure, as the voltage was still adequate.

If you do go through with battery replacement, do not forget to properly register the new battery. This can be done via cell phone app like Bimmerlink, via certain OBDII scanners or at the dealer for a service charge. If you don't do that, the new battery will be damaged within 6 - 8 months and you will require a new one.

The condition of battery can be monitored via free version of the Bimmerlink app and similar.

What Billfitz had linked is a great small tool. It is perfect for daily watch of the in-car electrical system including monitoring of battery capacity (important).

What I like about it is it's always there in plain view. When you get in the car you see the battery voltage. If it's over 12v you know it's good. When you start the car you'll see the voltage dip. If it stays above 11v you know the cranking amps are good. When the car is running you see the alternator voltage. If it's above 14v you know it's good. It's only when one or more of those three conditions aren't met that you need to investigate, and even then it may not be the battery, it could be parasitic drain or another problem. If you took the time to go through all the 'is my battery bad' posts you'd see 75% or more turn out to not be the battery.
