Name a better sounding engine..
Got taken out in a v12 Aston DBS (the Bond one) the other day and it had a fruitier exhaust than standard. My word the noise it made!
As much as I like my m60 sh1box I do miss the noise of a decent car. My best sounding car was without a doubt my old TVR Chimera with the rear silencers removed, that rover v8 bellow and rumble was epic. My old Alfa 156 v6 was also very nice to listen to. The f31 340i with valves always open was also good. Now I know some of you have had lots of nice motors so what's the best sounding car you've had out of interest? |

If we're restricting it to cars we've owned...then I have fond memories of my mk5 Golf R32 with milltek (resonated). VR6 rasp and DSG upshift blips were epic, before the more manufactured DSG 'farts' of current models.
I did also like the N55 engined M135i I had, but the Golf did without the piped in engine noises of the 1 series.

A 5 litre V8 Ford Mustang with a Roush exhaust takes some beating IMHO. The deep rumble just sounds powerful.
12 cylinders always sound a bit too 'shrill' for me. My next door neighbour has a DB9 6 litre. You can hear it start up from 100 yards away but it's not the most pleasant sound to my shell-likes. The neighbour the other side has a V6 Emira. That's sounds like my dishwasher. Awful. I actually really like the noise that my 'abomination' makes with it's bespoke stainless four outlet pipes and a smaller silencer. The M54 straight 6 makes a good noise out of the box, but mine sounds 'nice'. Not in-yer-face loud, but you know it's running. Nice burbling on the overrun. I purposely asked them for it not to be too 'anti-social'. I also have a K&N cone filter and no under bonnet padding, so the slurp of the intake it quite addictive too. Here's an obligatory picture! |

Noise is important to me, as you might know. A noise and a refined noise is quite different. so for example, Some will say an E92 M3 with anything more than a two pipe mod sounds great, but it does not, its just load, shouty, trumpety, farty, crude and unrefined!
Anyway. Without anything else coming close Ferrari F430 With Challenge Headers and F1 X-pipe. AKA mine. At a recent Super car meet, with Pista's, Aventadors, GT3RS, V10's and many others, mine was voted best sound. Its probably the closest you will get to that F1 sound, its like this but relax I have custom remote valves fitted! V8's are my favourites, but here are some nice sounds that are worth a mention: RB26DETT with the right exhaust sounds mental. AMG's with the right mods do sound good. The 6.2 and 4.0TT stand out for me. TVR's The best I had was a Griffith 5.0 it was a bit crude but really load modified. Mustang GT350 always sounded nice! Not a fan of V10's although I do like Audis 2.5 5 cylinder in the RS3 / TTRS Some Jap 4 pots can sound great with the right mods! |

I think the right answer would be the BRM v16 or the five rotor that guy built. There's a few good three and four rotors out there too.

Remember our roots - nothing finer than an F31 335d…
Actually quite liked that sound! But of the cars I’ve had I think I’m voting for the current MX5 with the BBR work done to it - burbly at low revs, sounds really great through mid range, top end is good.

I had a Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo which had lovely 5 cylinder sounds. My Macan GTS also sounded pretty decent as well, my actual old car appeared yesterday on a YouTuber review of the GTS which was nice to see and hear again.

I would say the 103 twin cam on my 2017 Harley Street Bob sounds lovely. 1690cc in 2 cylinders, it shakes at idle but it's all part of the charm, has a lovely burble on overrun, but also a satisfying bark when cracking open the throttle!

For me, the winner by a mile was the F90 I had with Mperf exhaust which was one of the final ones produced before OPF/GPFs came into force.
It was literally a swansong from BMW. |

It was a bit of a 'fake' noise, though, IMO. |

Clearly I'm going to go with V8 Vantage
![]() But I do think the 355 / 360 / 430 V8s also sound very special. But a very different noise to the Vantage. If the rover engine ever makes it into the MGB, I'll let you know what that sounds. Many, many years back, I had a Rover 3500 P6 with a cherry bomb exhausted fitter. Now that was loud ![]() |
