2011 BMW X3 MSRP US$37,625 with more features standard. - Built in Spartanburg SC, USA Isn't that a substantial drop in pricing considering the rise in prices of other BMW models? |

This may lower the cost for 3 series cars in Canada. We have a 6.1% import duty on cars made outside of North America. Due to NAFTA, cars made in Mexico, the US and Canada have no applicable duty. Is there an import duty for cars in the US?

I would say that BMW is not going to allow their name to used on a sub standard product. If they do go ahead with builds in the USA that will be a good thing for all of us. It will create jobs and bring the cost of BMW onwership to a more affordable price. I say start building those 3's.

I am afraid that we will see the 3er come the way of the new VW and the VW Passat! The Passat is being built in Chattanooga Tenn. and the new design looks very watered down compared to the Euro version!
If the F30 is built in SC hopefully they will not water the product down or Americanize it! |

The problem with Ford/GM is the union workers. Toyota has plenty of plants in the US and they don't have the same problems.

Buy a 3 series touring instead if you want a 3 series built in Germany I know here is Australia the E90 sedans come from SA but the E91 touring comes direct from Germany.

My current 335 was built in Germany. I've not seen one here made in South Africa.

The Euro Passat has now real high class quality, feeling, toys...and price. Let's take my target - Passat 2.0 TDI Highline 4motion + DSG 170 PS, with all the toys included - Adaptive Bi-Xenon with LED DRL's, Adaptive Cruise Control with auto emergency brake, Heated + Cooled Seats, Auto Parking, Rear Camera, Navi, Dynaudio Sound etc. Costs in Bulgaria 105 000 BGN which is 53 000 Euro or 72 500$ with all the VAT+Taxes. The top end US Spec Passat is rumored to be 37-40k$ but missing a lot of the toys and probably the quality of the leather etc. But hope that BMW would never do this, that would be suicide for me...

Overall, I think building them here is fine, and probably a good thing on many levels.
In the main, however, if it'll keep the cost of my next 3er down to just above the average price of a car, fine by me. It doesn't make me happy each day to know that I drive an expensive car. Indeed, for daily driving -- which is what my 3er is for -- I don't want to have to spend over $40K, and preferably, I'd spend something like $35. I'm sure BMW recognize that for the 3er to remain as solid as it is, they have to keep the prices down. It's been rising rapidly over the past decade. A mainstream car is not supposed to cost $50K, which nearly is about what well equipped 3ers cost these days.

If BMW appreciates the USA so much, why don't they fix their euro-spec spedometers when they sell a car in the US?
It's my understanding that in the EU (pronounced euwwwww ; )) speedos must read 5% fast. That's exactly what my BMW's does from new (2008 328xi). My vette and subie are within 1mph at 60-80 of GPS. I thought it was a quality issue until I realized, it was just BMW being lazy and not correcting their speedos outside of the EEUUUWWWWWW. As for German engineering - see all the threads here about valve lifters and HPFP... Cars are cars, and companies are companies. You generally get what you pay for. The E90 seems to be seriously over-engineered in stupid driver interface and gadgetry areas, and lacking basic solid design in the nuts and bolts. It's a very nice driving car, but seriously, no oil dip stick? Sticking HVL? Failing HPFP? Reverse so close to 1st you just have to drop the clutch and see? AUTOMATIC WINDSHIELD WIPERS BUT NO WATER TEMP GAUGE??? BMW, where have you gone? |

Noticing that some of you are running around with obscene ideas.
Rumor control. Bearing an actual confirmation that the 3er will be manufactured in the US. 1. If 3er Production does arrive in the USA. Then it will be only to serve the US and surrounding markets only. Official production for the 3er will remain in Germany. If the US does get the go ahead for 3er production then it will join countries such as South Africa , India , China and Malaysia in satisfying production for those regions. The home of the BMW 3er is and will be Germany. 2. BMW will not and do not have the necessary budget to develop two different models for two different markets. The China made F30 will get a LWB version , like it's 5er brother but BMW's new architecture makes it easy to do so. BMW will not have a 3er like VW have the Passat. The 3er will remain the F30 3er in all markets. There is no plans to make the 3er in the guise of the Passat by making it accessible to more by extensive cost-cutting. BMW is a premium brand. VW, no matter how mutch they state they are , are not. 3. The state of the Touring is thus... The 5er Touring was pulled within the US market because the car was not selling, customers went for the X5 or other type of crossovers instead. The 3er Touring is in the same position that BMW have to make the entrepenurial decision regarding it's future in the US and so far it has no future. It is appreciative to know that the Touring has some supporters but not enough to support within the market. I should point out that competitors who have remained or entered this segment are experiencing similar response to the Touring in regards to sales, especially when they have a similiar sized crossover/SUV in the same segment.

It wont mean cheaper cars. It will mean more profit for BMW. They sell almost every 3 they can make. I'm not sure why you would think they would lower the price.
