I wanted to post on this thread as this is the first thread that pops up for timing chain while doing a search.

I had my timing chain fixed exactly 3 years ago and the dealership said they broke again. Thankfully I had extended warranty so they paid for it

Hey everyone,
Has anyone had any success after these many years by turning off ASS, changing the oil more often, and allowing the engine to warm up before driving it hard?
I like to think the original TC on my 2013 328i xDrive has lasted 100k miles because of this reason. I’m up north, make frequent short trips with the occasional highway run, use 0w30 Castrol Edge Euro (made in Belgium) every 4000 miles, and use 91 octane.

Many who followed the same routine had timing chain failures. The only commonality is they all had the same tensioner.

timing chain issue

Buying a new sport wagon, have 2001 and love it buy after 20+ years and 200k miles it's dying on me.

Still cant' figure out if the timing chain guide is the issue, the tensioner, what year's exactly are affected.

Did find the attached which lists models and specific productoin dates but it's just what is covered in the lawsuit.

You mentioned in another thread that you were going to change the tensioner on your N20. Do you need to open the valve cover and use special tools to ensure that the cam doesn’t move when replacing the tensioner? One Indy told me it’s a simple job but another one told me I could cause the engine to skip timing if it’s not done correctly.

Thank you

No. I did use a clamp inserted through the oil filler to put pressure on the chain against the sprocket to keep it from jumping. None of the other posts I've seen where they replaced the tensioner mentioned doing anything. Neither does TIS.

Do you need the timing tool kit to replace the timing chain tensioner?

I have a 2014 f31 with 193k and I've been quoted $4k to replace the oil pump chain, timing chain and related components. With an x-drive the drive axles and differential apparently have to come off to get the oil pan off. As well, it was recommended that the valve cover be replaced at this point as they don't go back on easily. Other than the turbo actuator that I recently replaced myself, the car has needed no repairs to date. But obviously at those miles there will be other issues around the corner. I've been weighing just dumping the car for another one with half the mileage. I've reviewed a lot of CARFAX reports and I've never seen one indicating that the oil and timing chain issue has been dealt with. I know not all all indie shops report to CARFAX, but do the BMW dealers just not report the warranty replacements either? Seems odd as they report every oil change they do on my car.

Carfax gets its data from state DMVs, insurance companies, and those repair shops and dealerships that do business with them. Everything else may never get reported.
