Form what I saw, the 340i just came along with great deals for a great car so the value proposition was there to move. For me, diesel had nothing to do with the change - a very nice M3 just became available and affordable so I went for it. My first remark was a hit tongue in cheek!

However, I'm based from home, so pretty much claim all my miles back. I was claiming 13p a mile for the diesel, now getting 21p a mile. I'm actually better off, wish I'd changed years ago. I also liked both cars, each one was great in its own way, I just like the petrol now because it's something different having had diesels for the last 15 years. |

I chose diesel as I would generally do 15,000 miles a year nearly all on motorways, having the similar power in a petrol (540i) would cost a lot more fuel to run and for me it's all about running costs.
Maybe that's the wrong way to look at it but as the car is not being sold that's what matters. 600+ miles to a full tank is pretty impressive as it £150 a year tax and £314 insurance. I appreciate it will depreciate but no more or less than any other mainstream BMW |

I have had both petrol and diesel over the years, but the last 3 cars have been 3 series diesel BMW's. Given a choice, I much prefer a diesel, mainly due to the relaxed high speed cruising at low revs, the MPG and the torque.
The budget has levelled out the tax between petrol and diesel. Prior to the budget, there was a great deal of speculation about what may happen to diesels - and it never did. If you look at the Euro 6 standards, petrol is better on NOX and diesel on CO2. IMO, they are both equally bad for the environment, but the Euro 6 standard has tightened things up greatly. |

The real issue for existing diesel owners will arise when local councils start banning diesels from city/town centres. I read somewhere that Qxford had set a date for a complete ban and how much of a problem this will become is at this stage hard to predict.

Surely it won't be a blanket ban on diesels. A 20 year old smoker is a different proposition than a Euro 6 engine.

The irony of banning modern diesels while old commercials chug around doing the majority of the polluting.
It won't happen. They might ban cars so old no one cares. Then the rest will be taxed. Councils are all for punitive taxes to fund the pensions. The last thing they want is people *not* coming to town to spend money. In the big picture diesels will still be worthwhile and worth having, just not as much as they have been. I only bought diesel for the awd. Had a 340i xd existed I'd have bought that instead. |

VAG ruining it for everyone! Hope they get a huge fine again.
That said yes there is a lot of anti diesel press going on but for me I cannot move to a gas guzzling petrol as a second car. I have a friend with a 2015 340i which I for a few days and averaging 25-27mpg around town and 36-38 on the motorway was a no no. Bear in mind this was September time. Cold and dense winter air mean it would drop another 2-3mpg. My 430d is giving me around 36-38 around town and last weekend on a 460mile trip I got about 53mpg mix of 50mph average speed zones and 70+Rest of the way. |

unfortunately soon these power engines will dominated by electric cars, likes of 340i will be seen an EV car overtaking and dissapearing very quickly, all you can brag about then its just the engine sound and poor economy

Diesel is a good fuel, its technically more efficient for energy per ml, and we now have cars which are cleaner too - I can't see that this doom and gloom is fair really, especially for euro 6 cars tbh. it still works for me, and i'll deal with whatever BS stance from the government is being peddled at the time.

What it will mean, diesel will cost more to run clean, both for adjusted CO2 levels (taxation), and costs of running better exhaust after treatment. First cars through the new WLTC test suggest something like 15% higher CO2 ratings. |

The hit that diesels have taken has nothing to do with rational buyers, car enthusiast and forum members. But to do with the confidence or lack of it of the car buying masses. November sales figures were down 30% for soot chuckers. Part due to do with hybrids and
full electric cars. This increases the amount of used diesels on the forecourts, which will also knock values.

Eating beef is more harmful to the planet than diesels based on news making headlines this week? Oxford perhaps should ban Big Mac from the town center

It does make me wonder if manufacturers will delay in complying with it until the last minute, since the penalty for non-compliance is a one off (typically) £300 charge, which will be a lot cheaper than the fuel efficiency hit. |
