Ok I managed to ask a friend to help in the experiment for F30AM on how the 335DX compares to the new MK7 Golf R.
Initial thoughts The Golf R has a good amount of standard equipment that is an optional extra on my BMW. such as folding mirrors and xenon lights. The standard features such as 3 different driving modes and an individual mode that allows you to configure your own setting such as steering feel, air con, accelerator, engine and dynamic bend lights is a nice benefit. The engine noise inside the cabin does sound very nice but is artificial and comes through the speakers but who cares when your sitting inside the cabin. The stereo. Bloody awful. Definitely need to upgrade it! My sister hates the standard sound too and wishes she upgraded. When you get into the car the ambient lighting is very nice too. Driving experience I drove the golf R and my mate drove the 335D XD. That way I could see how they both compared as I know my car and wanted to push my sisters to see if it was quicker, slower or very similar. Both car remained in sport mode the entire time. We both had our hands free kit on so we could talk the entire time. From a standing start: The 335D is noticeable quicker. We tried it 3 times and by 80mph, the 335D was around 4-5 car lengths in front. From mid range: The first 3 attempts whilst rolling, the Golf R pulled away easily up to 80mph. At least 3 cars lengths. Whilst talking on the phone the problem is whenever you put your foot down in the 335d it kicks down before going. We tried another 3 occasions but using the paddle gears so it didn’t need to kick down and the 335d pulled away everytime. So unless you are using your paddles, then you will struggle against most hot hatches!! Cornering: Golf R wins hands down. The steering is weighted heavily and feels so much more planted. No body roll at all and corners really well. As we all know the 335D has a lot of body roll. Summary The golf R is a lovely car and drives very well indeed. You will not be upset going to the R. The only worry is being targeted by thieves like I have written in another thread. Over the 20 miles we covered. The 335D managed 27.1 mpg whilst the Golf R did 23.4 mpg

I'm surprised to hear how much quicker off the line the 335d is though, and that it is slower in the mid-range, as it is slight counter-intuitive to what you'd think in comparing similarly powered diesel and petrol cars. However, I think this is why you feel such a benefit from the ECU upgrade in GT Sussex's car, as instead of dropping a gear it just uses the torque to surge forward!

Great work Badders. From the R I looked at I agree, the spec included is quite cool, adaptive cruise control was the biggest surprise for me.

I was a big VW fan for over 15 years (Corado, Jetta GLX, Jetta 1.8T) and love the Golf R on paper. Seriously considered a Mk6. When I sat in it , it just didn't feel right anymore. Even seeing the Mk7 at the car shows I've outgrown it now at this point in my life. I'm not owning a F30 to impress others, but it impresses me.
I'm sure I'll go back to VW someday, as VW will probably be one of the last manual transmission hold outs when I get my next car. Last edited by focal; 06-11-2014 at 10:17 AM.. |

Thank you so much. Great write up. The 7R with DSG will be faster still. Mine will have DSG and being Red will be even faster.
I'll reply in full when I get home as it is a PITA on the iPhone or any phone. |

No problems. Trust me, there will not be too much difference between the Golf R DSG and the 335D in real world terms. Maybe a car length or 2?

Brilliant experiment @badders74, we should do more of these.
Interesting how far the 335d got in front from a standing start, both 4WD too.. *Probably* the same kind of results I’d expect for a 330d sdrive vs 335d too? Yet F30AM thought the Golf was a lot quicker than his 330d when he tested it.

Also, not surprised the Golf mullered the 335d through the bends with standard suspension.

We took the Golf R out afterwards together and noticed that the Golf R seems to take a big longer to get up and running them the 335D. Like most petrol turbos it doesnt really hit its stride until its up over 4K rpms!

I have adaptive suspension but you just feel more confident in the golf R to go quicker than in the 335d. We are not pro drivers so didn't push the cars to the limit but you just felt more confident to go a lot fast in corners than the 335d.

I suspect a DSG equipped R would be broadly similar both off the line and through the gears to the 335d - that was my perception when I drove it. The higher power to weight ratio of the golf being offset by the lower torque to weight.
I'd agree with the observation around the handling - the Golf is in an entirely different league to the 335d, feeling far more agile and with significantly less body roll. I'd wager it would live with my mate's Cayman R cross country. |

We've got a 335d xdrive and had a loan of a golf R for 3 days. Not looking to replace the 335d, the Golf will be a second car in the family.
335d has 19" wheels and has done c5k miles Golf R had 18" wheels and had 500 on the clock Golf was DSG On the cars I tested there is virtually no difference in a standing start and virtually no difference when on the move. They are really closely matched. The Golf murders the BM for both comfort over the bumps (the adaptive suspension settings make a bigger difference that on the BM) and cornering As a school run car which will provide a bit of fun the golf is ideal....have ordered one. MPG when pushing on isn't that much different between the cars but driving to from work, I get 45+ in the BMW where as the Golf was 33mpg ( though will improve I suspect when run in) |

No I don't think so nisfan.
LC on the Golf DSG will give you a perfect start every time. I'd bet a couple of groats than the vast majority of manual Golf drivers would not get within half a second of the factory time.... Thus, in the real world the DSG car will consistently be faster than the manual. |

Autocar tested a DSG equipped 7R in streaming wet conditions and recorded a 0 to 60 time of 4.8s! Not bad at all. 0 to 100 in streaming wet conditions was 12s. Again not bad at all.
