The discussion was about driving in the snow and how awd enables a person like myself to drive at the corollas pace so as to get me from point a through b. if you have winters and want to do more that 45 mph in the snow be my guest. I am more than happy with my staggered 19s riding at speeds akin to the 1997 corollas. If you just drive within the cars limits you will find you will do fine with the summers.

Don't worry man, I'm on my Summer Continental ContisportContact SSRs right now. Everyone here is so eager to scream were liabilities, dangers, blah blah blahity blah. The same people don't think twice about doing 100 on a highway. I'm pretty sure my stopping distance going 60 in an inch of snow on summer tires is less than yours at 100 in winters on dry road.
According to these people 10 years ago no car should have been on the road during snow, since back then there was no such thing as winter tires as they are defined today. Hell, I took my 1990 Nissan Sentra POS through a snowstorm fine. I think my 2013 BMW can handle it. Yes, winter tires are better. But that's like saying "OMG THE FRONT OF YOUR CAR ISN'T MADE OF PLAYDOH? YOU'RE A HAZARD!" |

Fortunately, most that don't purchase winter tires are on all-seasons; tires are simply not of interest to them. |

My current summer tires have more snow grip than my all seasons from 15 years ago.

With my E90's I drove the summer performace tires in an inch of snow or less. Otherwise, just left it in the garage. I couldn't get past my driveway in more snow than that. Lately I found that I've gotta be on snowy roads more than I'd like to be so threw on the Blizzack tire/wheel package from Tire Rack. No sense risking injury or damage when it can all be prevented with $1200 worth of snow tires on all 4 corners.

We have already established your grip on tire history is, at best, tenuous. Run summer tires in the snow if you want - I am not part of the lecturing crowd - but do not attempt to justify it with specious historical "facts." Even if true, do you really want to argue your current decisions are grounded in competing with 15 and 20 year-technology? "15 years ago the bar was much lower and, look at me!, I limped over the old low bar of nearly a generation ago." |

I got caught once in my Z06 in a 1/4" of snow a couple of years ago. I could not even begin to get up my driveway where the snow was fresh. Truly high performance summer tires are completely useless in snow. |

I can't believe this is such a problem. Winter tires for weather below 7 degrees celsius. Summer for above 7 and all seasons if you barely making those low temps. Summers will survive light snow with careful driving. But if you hit black ice, you are fucked!

Imagine driving a DodgeViper in the snow, that should be fun. Truth be told I am scared of driving that car even in the summer

Everyone can drive how they want in whatever wheels they want. Ultimately, I'm 10 years accident free of any kind, and 15 years free of any accident out side of parking bumps. On my shitty tires and all. Let's see how many can claim that here.

Yes, If I was in PA or Vermont or Colorado or wherever, I'd invest in some winter tires. But this is NY. They salt the roads BEFORE it snows. Same in NJ. I was there this morning at 8AM after a night of snow, and guess what? Not a speck of snow on the roads. The only place we'll have to deal with snow is on our own driveways. And no, I'm not gonna spend 2-3k to get up a driveway. |
