For city driving in a city like New York, along with the added friction of AWD, that's actually pretty decent overall MPG. I live outside of Chicago and my driving is mostly suburban/highway around 75-80% and city type around 20-25%. With my 340i RWD w/8spd AT I have been getting on average 28.5mpg mostly with daily commuting. With my F30 335i RWD w/8spd AT I was getting about 1.5mpg less. With both F30's I run higher tire pressures, about 38psi front and 40psi rear. I NEVER use "ECO pro" as I can't stand my BMW feeling like some underpowered econobox with an extremely lazy transmission. For the majority of my driving I set the throttle response and trans operation at normal/comfort mode. Also, the Chicago area is quite flat, and the great New York metro area is also quite flat. My point is that there are a lot of drivers who drive on very hilly terrain, and along with AWD that will result in lower MPG naturally. Comparing MPG is hard to do unless you are comparing with drivers who drive on the same roads and conditions. Keep your tires properly inflated, especially during the times of year when temperatures can vary greatly. A tires psi can change by 1psi for every 10 degrees F. So if you set your cold tire psi one day when it's 70F, then the next day the ambient temp is down to 40F your tires cold psi could be 3psi lower then where you set them just the day before. Try running your cold tire pressure around 3psi higher than standard and see how much mpg improvement you might get. |

Jeebus, 229 miles at an average speed of 22mph. You driving in and out of school zones ? I'll stick with a little more than half that and get there a lot quicker.

Thanks guys for the input I feel a little bit better now about my consumption.
P.S 340 owners probably have better gas consumption then us 335 guys. and better stock power. Im getting the 2018 440 coupe next. |

I think its because most of the time, I don't drive distances long enough for the car to warm up. Living in queens, the commutes are pretty much about 10~15min max, drive about 5~10miles tops. Dont know if this contributes in anyway.

If you think this is bad, you should never consider an E9x M3 with the V8. I get only ~200 miles to the tank (15-16mpg) in my E90 M3 and that's with a mix of city and highway driving. It's one of the reasons I'm looking forward to my F30 arrival in about 3 weeks...fewer gas stops.

I was going to pick up a 328d and was completely ready to sign the papers. There was a 435i xdrive in the lot, and I thought what the heck lets give it a try. Huge mistake. The 328d was an absolute snail when driven back to back. Yea, it has torque, but nowhere near the n55. I had a realization that if I were to buy a BMW, it has to be at least a 6 cylinder. Smooth responsive power delivery compared to the gutless rattling of the diesel. Yea, I only get 17mpg, but I've never regretted my decision one bit.
