PTF will give you guidance on how to determine that, reach out to them.

Best way is with e-sys, the other way (I haven't tried it) is by using the usb port under the armrest, but some people say it's not accurate. Reach out to PTF and they will give you definite answers on whether or not you need the unlock.

You can also find out by saving your driver profile to a flash drive and reading the .mpd file from your computer:

Open this file in a text editor: BMWData/MobileProfile/<profilename>.mpd and your I-Step will be printed in the top of the file

Sent the tuner both DME's to have the new one cloned and then written with the new tune. Easy Peezy...
I'm assuming if you've already flashed your current DME with an aftermarket tune, you're out of luck cloning? Or is there a way to buy a second DME that hasn't been flashed to use for dealer trips? That would be great to have 1 DME for a tune and 1 you can use when going to the dealer.

My guess is that switching the DME won't fool the dealer. The DME which you put in when going to the dealer will show it hasn't been used for what ever time you had the other DME in the car. There may be other ways they can tell too, but best of luck.

I'd assume you'd need to use your cloned one for a tune, since they probably detect a change in serial number or something like that on the DME.
