I have a Rolex Sea Dweller which was my originally my Grandfathers and was made the year I was born, 1978. I dont dare wear it, which is a shame, but I want to keep it within the family and pass it on to my sons when the time comes.
Im not really a fan of something on my wrist, but got bought this as a leaving gift a few years back and I quite like it and wear it quite alot, its a Rotary 500c. Not a watch of distinction by any means, but looks more interesting than it is. |

Snap! The watch, not the wrist

About 16 years ago after my father died I bought myself a Tag (Aqua Racer I think???) with part of my inheritance. It cost about 1,500 dollars when I bought it in New York. I know compared to some of the watches talked about here that's nothing, but to me it's an awful lot for a watch and I'll probably never spend that again on a watch. However, I wear it several times a week (when I'm not wearing my Fitbit, my current obsession!) and yes, it has marks on the strap now, and little scratches and dirt between the links. I know all these things mean it has lost any financial value compared to sitting in a box, but all these marks are my history with it. I understand your grandfather bought it the year you were born but don't you want to add your own story and history to the watch before you pass it on to your son? Otherwise (and this is just my two pence worth) you are handing on a finely assembled collection of small metal parts which together make a watch, but with no history or soul.. |

I'd like a new watch, I previously had a speed master and Rolex GMTII but they are so expensive these days, I gave £1000 for the speed master back in 2002 and £2350 for the Rolex back in 2004 IIRC and now a speed master 57 or moon watch is 5k+ and the Rolex 5k+
I'm still trying to get my head around it, I'd feel more comfortable shelling out for the Rolex than spending 5k+ on the speed master.

Work watch is a Breitling Avenger II Seawolf limited edition, very nice but for casual wear a comfortable Bulova Accutron Alpha.

I'm doing some handwringing on this at the moment like some people do with car purchases but I never really think twice about that. My old GMTII: Shouldn't have sold it.....

There's a Rolex Sheep-dweller model for that.

Thirded . Wear it, even if only for special occasions, enjoy it & pass it down, many years down the road when you have even more fond memories added to what it already has for you

I have a handful of mechanical watches from the UK, Switzerland and Germany, all with Swiss movements. Favourites are hand-wound ones made by Davosa and Steinhart
Inexpensive, classy and with the same innards as big brand name ones costing 5x the price

I wasn't sure if I should go for the white or black dial but in the end I thought that while the white dial does look amazing the black just edged it for me I think there are better watches out there but in many ways you can't beat a Rolex for its overall ownership proposition. That's how I justify my collection anyway |
