Watching this thread with interest as I have an intermittent clonking sound from the front offside on certain roads. Over things like speed humps it's fine, but you know those roads where there's bands across the road where there's a slight gap where the join has degraded - do 30mph along there and it always clonks. Thought I was imagining it or that it was normal, but maybe not now.
Car has passive/std suspension so don't know if it's related. Car is booked in for a steering issue (squeal/whine & scraping on full left lock & a visual check revealed nothing), so will ask them about the 'clonk' but suspect I'll get the "it's fine" routine.

I have been keeping tabs on this thread, correct me if i'm wrong this issue has only seemed to have only affected saloons and adaptive guys....my f31 passive msport doesn't suffer from it. All very strange, seems bmw are in denial if they are all connected. hope you guys get to the bottom of it and bmw fix the problem free of charge!!

Dick Lovett, Bristol. Very good all round, and the sales guys are great. It was this that drew me in - they were very down to earth, honest and full of enthusiasm. By contrast, I found the sales guys at Audi up the road a bit snooty and inattentive by comparison.
Generally impressed all round with Dick Lovett here - just think they're not geared up to spot this kind of fault. I'd guess this is true of a lot of dealers these days - I think service guys know how to do every possible kind of electronic diagnostic check with their eyes closed, but don't have a feel for driving the cars. |

I bought my car from Dick Lovett in Bristol and they are very good there. By contrast the Audi and Mercedes dealerships just round the corner from them were both awful. Neither of them could be bothered to sell me a car. On the occasions I've had to take my car back for the various teething problems I've encountered they've always been helpful even if they haven't always been able to put it right straight away. Thankfully I've not had any mechanical problems to take to them so far but overall they are a good dealership

Hi, yes, I really can't fault them either - great attitude on all fronts. I also tried Mercedes over the road and, your right, they couldn't be bothered to work on selling me a car.
I can forgive this situation, as it's way off the norm and needs someone who drives an F30 every day to spot the problem. |

This issue sounds worrying. I did some searching before ordering my car with adaptive, so would be well disappointed if this happened on mine...
Can anyone with a F31 adaptive suspension setup got this issue? |

has anyone recorded this noise? might be an idea to put an iphone on video recording and put it near the shocks / in the boot or somesuch and post the noise on the web. it might speed up the id of more sufferers and hence a bmw response, as it appears likely to be a technical issue that needs a fix.

How about taking it to an audi dealer and asking them if they can hear the noise, and they could put it in writing for the clearly-industrial-noise-affected-bmw-technicians...

So far not had any issues. Going over speed bumps or crap surfaces, no knocking noise in either Comfort or Sport mode.

I have been trying to find roads where the noise happens every time so that I can take a dealer technician on a field trip. Found loads near my house but none near the dealer (spend less time pottering around there) and don't fancy taking the technician on a 30 mile round trip.
In the course of this I have noticed something which I would appreciate someone checking on their car.. If I 'rock' the steering wheel (engine running, stationary) I hear what sounds like the very same knocking sound coming from the drivers front wheel area, although it sounds like it is closer to me than the drivers wheel. Can someone with and someone without the 'knocking' noise have a go in their car and see if they hear the same thing?

I thought I was imagining more noise from my rear nearside when hitting a small pothole/grate at low speeds but it seems not. I am not a techy at all and wondered if it was something to do with runflats. I have the 19" wheels M Sport wheels (403 I think)...i wonder if anyone with the 18 inch wheels has experienced the same issue?
I thought it was something flapping in the boot at first, or even some sort of sonic boom from the empty boot. I do think the noise is much less prominent with a passenger, particularly rear seat. I await developments with interest. Shaun |

Sat in my car right now and I don't have the knocking sound.
When I turn the wheel still no noise, thankfully

I don't have the steering knock. However took mine back to Lloyd, Colne today because of the knocking from the rear. It SEEMS to be from rear nearside and is prominent when that wheel goes over a small pothole or other undulation at speeds under 40 mph. Their top mechanic came out with me and confirmed he could hear exactly what I was on about......always a start.......and spent an hour with it on a ramp. Sadly they found nothing obvious so they have raised a PUMA case and I now await contact.
I have normal M Sport suspension, not adaptive. Fingers now crossed! Last edited by Shaunguitar; 04-04-2013 at 07:10 AM.. |

I have just picked up my car from the dealers after having a new steering rack fitted. Knocking sound is no more... the car feels tighter as well, which could be down to a couple fo things - new rack replacing a used one, no more slack in the system, just stepping out of the crappy loan 118 that they gave me...
Either way i am happy.
