I got a reckless back in January. The cop was a total dick and didnt want to listen to a word i had to say because I was a 19 year old driving a BMW. I overtook a guy who kept brake checking me and a cop saw my overtaking him (It was double lane). These were his exact words "I had to go 90 to catch up to you." First of all why in the world would he go 90 mph cutting through traffic to get to me (he turned on his lights when he got close to me). Second of all he didnt have a reading of my speed and got pissed that i had a radar. lastly, he had no proof of me speeding or driving reckless.
Got a lawyer, went to court and got dropped down to unsafe driving. He probably had to reach his stupid quota. I swear some of New Jersey's finest have nothing better to do!

Maybe it seemed harmless to you, and perhaps it was relatively benign. But just because a cop wasn't able to get a fixed reading on your speed doesn't mean you're innocent. And if you lost a friend or loved one to an aggressive driver, your outlook might be different. |

Reckless driving is very subjective and therefore, hard to prove. The thing is, you don't know what else he has, maybe he did write down how fast you were going or "tag" you with the radar. You also don't know what he wrote down or recorded from your conversation, but not a bad idea to bet he got everything. So only you really know whether or not they "have you" and whether you can benefit from having a lawyer. |

I would definitely hire some legal help. It's a misdemeanor in my state and you would almost certainly lose your license for six months. I would try to get it knocked down to a moving violation or less. I got the exact same ticket a few years ago in Virginia and when I got to court with my lawyer I watched them toss the book at people until my turn where I got it reduced presumably because I had a lawyer.

Get a lawyer and hope for the best.
In my area (Long Island) a lawyer can almost always reduce you to just a fine with no points. In my county specifically you don't even see a judge first, you see a DA and they just offer you a lower offense of the bat in hoping you'll just pay it and won't fight it. That being said I stopped speeding as much, I stick to the usual 10 over on the highway like everyone else and 5 over on the local 30 roads. The most edgy thing I do now I have no front plate lol, but I think I've passed every kind of cop in my area with it in and no one seems to give a shit, who knows, maybe its because I'm not speeding.

If you need to go 90 to pass someone then you were both already traveling fast enough. If he was going even 60 in a 55 you would have had to do 70 at the most to pass. You were already speeding (my guess 20 over, based on a 55 limit) and you wanted to go even faster. Please park mommy and daddy's BMW until you learn some responsibility.

it annoys me when people feel the need to police the roads. if there's two lanes and you have space on the right to travel or you see someone wants to go faster behind you on the left then just move over. enough of this "you're traveling fast enough" first off, the left is not a traveling lane but a PASSING lane. that's it! move over and let those that want to speed, speed and if they get caught by the police so be it. that's why we have police, to POLICE the roads. now if it's a one lane road that's a different story
