Gentlemen, I went through this when getting my PPK installed in April. Unfortunately my DME got fried so have to do this again. This is the blueprint of how the install goes that I posted back then. This only applies to pre november builds.

FWIW 6 cannot be avoided

Will do

UPDATE

Here is how I think this is playing out based on the calls I received today and yesterday:

1) You bring your car in, it doesn't matter what you tell them, they will have to go through a set process until revised instructions are sent from BMW.
2) The process involves them installing this for you.
3) The DME will not "take", i.e. the kit includes the hardware, unfortunately your car's software will not recognize the hardware and the car will not start. The car is assuming its been stolen, its a big deal to the car if the engine h/ware is being tempered with.
4) They will open up a service bulletin with BMW, BMW will approve for them to install the new DME software and program the car or whatever instruction they will give them.
5) The instruction will not work
6) BMW will then remotely program the car with everything installed in the car so the car recognizes the DME h/ware and the software in the car accepts this new h/ware.
7) You will then pick up your car.

My car is now at 6. 6 can take up to 2 days but right now the estimate by the dealer is it should be available today. I still think tomorrow at the earliest.

Unfortunately this is the way its going to play out for many of you. How long each step takes is going to depend on your circumstances and also on when BMW revises this whole process. Bear in mind that most of us who have had this done (I think there is 4 of us with the DME) have pretty much broken the dealerships virginity regarding this install so there aren't that many people who are getting this done. This is probably why BMW has not bothered to change the steps.

No dealer in the history of the PPK has been able to install it, only IRAP will make it happen. You should be fine after IRAP

^^^^^
Technically true.
Dealers have installed the HARDware, BMW AG has had to run remote IRAP sessions to help with the software - it takes something like 6 hours apparently.

This sounds better than what I said

1 day; happy with that!
Had the car nearly a week now with the PPK. Note mine's a 2012; so it's the early build. It's better; but def not crazy night-and-day. I've owned boosted cars that have put down close to 500hp so I've got some 'butt-dyno' background to speak from.
That being said, I'll agree with a majority of the comments when I say it is noticeable. Specifically the Sport Displays that now goto 400/400 will both crank to 320/320 and hold there rock solid (however accurate that is). If you're around that 3000-400rpm range and mash the gas on/off you can see and feel the suspension lift and drop as the car squats when the power hits and hits hard.

Still super happy my local shop had it all done in 1 day. They mentioned the IRAP session and all that. Note I had them order it back in mid-June!

Based on the plant code I done need a new DME (11/6/12 build). Still hesitant as I don't want to order a PPk and find out I did need the DME. Local dealer is charging a handful so I wanted to but it online.

Anyone go the online route for the PPK and have your dealer install?

Thanks for the info. I finally understand why so many trouble with this new DME thing. So do you think or told that the back order was because they retool the DME?

Hope the dealer honors the hours quoted to do the install and doesn't fleece you for more $.

here is my update. Dropped the car off this Monday. SA does not have any idea of this MPPK then quote me a fair labor price like under 400. I didn’t mention any of the complication to confuse them and hope they can figure this out. Afternoon, got a call saying the car is not ready but nothing more. Tuesday, saying the car is not yet ready the car is not taking the DME. Then this morning, get a call and my car is ready!!!!! It goes better than what I expected. I would say just let them do their thing and they will eventually figure this out. just a matter of time. Give it like 2-3 days.

Depends on the dealer. I got mine done last week and it was completed in 1-day. I was skeptical and talked to the service manager a few times but he was pretty confident in his guys.
And yes; mine's the older build - 2012 model purchased Oct/2012.

yes i read about your case. i think it is not normal that they can pull this off within 1 day unless they have heard enough or actually have done that before. hope you have enjoyed the upgrade. i cannt wait to feel it tonight when pick it up.

I got my PPK installed in April, it took one day. A week ago the DME got fried so they ordered another PPK under warranty end of last week. I got the call today that its been received and they expect it to take up to Friday for the install.
