...because I just found someone's documentation online from reverse-engineering the local network communications API for the smart pet door that we own!

I can now easily develop a device driver for our home automation system using this info, which will let me open/close the door from Siri, program an automation to turn the door off to keep OCD psycho dog inside when the lightning sensor detects an approaching storm, and even trigger the back yard lights to turn on for five minutes when the door opens after dark.

I'm as giddy as a kid in a JSON candy store right now.....

...or lock him IN the house, either through an automation or from telling Siri to disable the inside door-opening sensor. He can get back in as long as the outside door-opening sensor is enabled, but not get [back] out.

Realize that OCD psycho dog goes out into the back yard and tries to bite the lighting when he hears the first distant rumble of an approaching thunderstorm, and has no fear of letting himself out at 3 AM if he smells a passing skunk in the yard. We have let him have free run of a fenced-in pen 24/7 ever since he was a puppy, and even do monthly fire drills with him so that he lets himself out and goes to the far end of the pen whenever the smoke detector beeps.

Unfortunately, there are a few OCD triggers that make us need to keep him inside for his own safety. With a little custom programming, I'll be able to automate this instead of trying to beat the little white monster to the dog door when he's in full OCD knucklehead mode.....
