I've been reading the Coding thread for ages now and now I think I'll give it a go and have decided to build my own cable, the prices people are charging on eBay are a touch steep for what it is.
Total cost to build your own cable, I've worked it out to be about £5.42 potentially less if I get the 510 ohm from a Maplins for less than £1.53. 1. 1 Meter Shielded Cat6 cable: £1.90 http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...pf_rd_i=468294 2. 510 Ohm .25 Resistor: 3p + £1.50 delivery, will check Maplins if I can avoid the delivery charge. http://www.component-shop.co.uk/html/resistors.html 3. OBD216 Pin Male Connector: £1.99 inc delivery http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OBD2-OBDII...item460beca000 Dead easy build instructions for ENET Cable: http://www.f30post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=696777 Last edited by kitster; 03-17-2013 at 06:03 PM.. |

PMSL. It'll be like Red Dwarf. The screen will show Holly "the computer" and ask you not to do that...

Can someone help me out...
I understand that i need the cable and the SW. I have a link to the SW but it seems like it will cost 50EUR for a patch and token. Is that correct? My car is a Sept 12 build..

The newer build post Jan 13 require ver 48.3 and that requires the token to be purchased.... Mine is a Feb 13, so had to buy it, but it's been worth it as would have had to pay £100 for video in motion... PM Frogman or Shawnsheridan details under coding section for details. They are really helpful

This is all fascinating stuff. I myself don't have a DVD/TV function, but my dad has a DVD in his X5 and S-class - would be interesting to 'chip' it for them so my mum can watch movies on the fly.
A serious question though: does messing with the software invalidate the warranty or is this something that needs to be declared to the insurance company as some kind of 'mod'? I dread to think that something goes wrong with the car or there's an accident and either/both of them decide they're not going to do anything under cover as we've messed around with the software... |

I think what venkata is saying is that cars with a 2013 build date need the updated software which needs a token to work. Once the token has been bought the software will work on any 2013 car , not just his own car. Correct me if I am wrong

I went for the latest software, which needed me to buy the token, I just don't see why others couldn't use the same token and why we each have to buy our own?

Could someone kindly post a picture of the screen they see when "coding"? I'm curious as to how it looks! What does the car display and how do you change the values exactly? Anything like Visual Basic in Excel?! :P

Hmmm - no replies to my question about whether this invalidates warranty/needs declaration to insurance company...
Let me ask it another way: are you guys sure this doesn't invalidate the warranty or insurance terms? I ask coz I really would like the boot opening and a few other things to work as I'd like. I found it irritating with the E61 that certain things didn't do what I wanted...

From similar discussions on the Merc forums when I had my SLK, coding the screen to show DVDs, etc while the car is in motion WILL invalidate any insurance, and I doubt that an insurer will still cover without a massive hike in premium if you inform them it's been done.
One thing assessors check for in the event of an accident is if anything had been altered which may have resulted in a driver distraction - having a DVD playing while driving certainly counts, and they will not be likely to accept the argument that it was only for the passenger's use. Use at your own risk! |

Video In Motion - No issue with warranty. Issue with insurance if there is an incident with VIM active. Rear View Camera at any speed - No issue with warranty. Again, issue with insurance if it was distracting when in an incident. Remove first run camera disclaimer - No issue with warranty. Highly doubt there would be any issue with insurance. "Never solely rely on camera system" Tail lights as DRL - No issue with warranty. No issue with insurance. Sport Display to HP and NM - No issue with warranty. No issue with insurance.
