Side question: I had an AFE intake installed previously, and it caused the engine to bog down on cold startups. Anyone know if it will stop doing this with the BM3 tunes? Or do I need to wait for the cold start removal option to be added in? |

Hi everyone -
I'm just about to pull the trigger on BM3. Got my OBD cable and laptop ready to go. I'm running a '14 335i xdrive w/EWG. Only mods on my car currently are MPE and a drop in filter on the stock intake (K&N). From what I've been reading I should start off with the Stage 1 flash w/93 octane (available in my area). What kind of numbers would I be looking at? At Stage 1, are any supporting mods recommended (Chargepipe), or can I get away with being stock for a bit? |

Stage 1 doesn't really require any mods.

Cold start is removed on the latest Stage 2 OTS maps.

Yeah for sure. My first mod is going to be a new chargepipe but was wondering if I could go ahead with the tune and do the CP afterwards? Obviously I'd be more careful before a new one was installed.

Protuningfreaks are great group of guys who get overwhelmed with the same repetitive questions over and over again and they are super nice about responding to it (obviously this goes a long way with customer service and gaining new customers so I obviously see why.) Well I'm not affiliated with them so i can be more of an asshole.... shit guys - do you research or read anything before putting something on your car? It literally says it right on the FAQs. Spend a little time reading up on things and stop always wanted everything handed to you on a silver spoon (this is good everyday life advice too.) Most importantly, every car is different... so if you're that curious get your own results... aka vbox, dragy, dyno, track, etc. Have you gotten a baseline dyno done on your car? What were your numbers? Seems to me the ones who always want all the information are the ones who never do anything to get the information. Taken straight from their website: Any DYNO numbers or results? Many results on our instagram account @protuningfreaks but here are some links: f80.bimmerpost.com real world results/records listing: http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1383036 S55 (M3 / M4): Stage 1 93 octane: http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1297004 Stage 1 93 octane, comparison with JB4 on pump gas: http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1328339 Stage 2 93 octane: http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1320220 Stage 2 93 octane with OEM downpipes, comparison with JB4 : http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...&postcount=477 Stage 2 93 octane + Meth http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1435169 N55 EWG (235i / 335i / 435i / M2 / X4 M40i / X5 35i / 640/535): M2 (N55 EWG) FBO + Pure Stage 2 on pump 93 octane: http://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1344711 M2 (N55 EWG) FBO, Stock Turbo on pump 91 octane: http://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1437086 M235i, Stock turbo, pump gas, stock intercooler, just downpipe+intake: http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1331464 335i Stock turbo + meth (world record N55): http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1336322 335i FBO+Meth on stock turbo: http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...php?p=21017588 X4 M40i Stock Turbo 93 octane http://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1425842 PWG 535 FBO+Pure Stage 2: http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1433194 S63TU (M5 / M6 / X5M / X6M): Stage 2 on 93 octane + downpipes: http://f10.m5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1337143

If you are on stock DP then you should keep the cold start. Regarding the AFe intake, any aftermarket intake provides the risk of rough idle and hesitation as the MAF sensor prefers laminar flow in order to correctly read air mass. Stock intakes are designed to provide this optimum flow for the sensor. Aftermarket intakes are notorious for creating a turbulent flow which messes with the MAF. This is one of the reasons I chose to go with the CTS turbo intake. You should swap the stock intake back on, reset the DME by disconnecting the neg battery terminal for 5 mins and then see if your issues go away after the DME has had time to re-learn. If the issue goes away you'll know its an issue with the intake.

While I tend to agree that PTF seems like a great company with a great staff, ultimately they are looking to make a profit. Which is totally fine with me. Shit, if anyone understands the bottom line it's me. I was just looking for some real world experience and opinions from guys/gals who have recently flashed that may have more information than I do. I never understood why anyone in a forum setting would tell people to go "do your research" without asking if I have already done so. Forums are here for people to ask questions and learn from others. What would a forum be without questions, no matter how "noobish" or repetitive they may be? |

Read this entire thread, tons of info on your exact question and lots of dyno numbers from real world members (not companies.) Check them out on IG as well. Stage 1 requires no additional hardware (essentially stock car aside from tune.) Stage 1 typically makes ~20whp less then stage 2 (generally speaking). I personally recommend to upgrade your charge pipe (this is more preventative maintenance)

Go charge pipe my friend its extra insurance with the tune. Some stick with the stock pipe however,I'm not putting on my tune till I get mines plus my FMIC. Get your charge pipe and you'll be good. Insurance you don't get stuck.

Thing is I'm still under CPO warranty for another two years and really don't want to swap the DP out yet. The CP I'm willing to do because of all the issues with the stock one. So at the moment I'm looking at ER chargepipe and if BM3 is undetectable (still some debate about that), then I'll go that route. Still have more research to do before I pull the trigger.

I'm currently at 51,000 miles. Purchased the car on August 31st 2017, a day BEFORE they changed the CPO warranty to one year. So I have almost two full years of CPO warranty remaining. I drive less than 20 miles/day to work and back.

without the catless DP, not sure how much the tune will really help, i think most guys dive headfirst with the Catless DP as it makes so much HP.... I would not worry too much about the warranty in regards to the DP, i guess it all depends on your relationship with the dealer.

They Highly Recommend Downpipes especially if trying to gain more and track the car it would be a must.
