Question on the F30 328i going from single to dual
I did this about six months ago and have been extremely happy with the lower range sound and of course the cosmetics of having dual exhaust vs. twin on one side.
Here is the question for experts. I feel like I may have lost some of the lower end, off the line grunt as a result and my explanation is this but not sure if its just perception or could be reality. When I added the duals, just like in this post the pictures you see, there is one pipe running from the engine straight back and it used to bend around to the left into the muffler that had the twins on one side. With the new dual exhaust muffler, we had to tap into the other inlet pipe and by doing that, there was a direct straight line from the front of the car to the rear going out of that side. Even though the other side is connected, the right side now is more direct and so more exhaust comes out of that side than the other. By doing this, did we reduce the back pressure, which in turn is causing a cleaner flow, hence the reduced lower end grunt, which feels like reduced HP/TRQ. If the answer is yes, what would be the best way to build in some kind of restriction on that side-inlet pipe into the muffler to gain back the lower end again? |

On a side note, my car is now bone stock (engine performance-wise) other than the muffler and I love the little bit of extra tone the muffler gives (I also modded the inside of the muffler for a bit more). More importantly though, I like to look a whole lot better. |

I would go so far to say that I DEFINETELY feel it has gained up top, I both feel and see a noticable difference in how it pulls when goin flat out at speeds above 70 mph. Without a doubt it pulls a bit better. And that just makes sense since you have better exhaust evacuation now with the better flow in the MPE muffler.
And my flap is always OPEN on cold start, meaning fumes come out of both pipes and then after maybe 20 seconds or something it closes.

I let my friend do some fly-bys while I stood outside. Exhaust sounds incredible, groans, gurggles and burps... heard it two blocks away at full throttle.

Finally got around to the upgrade and pics.
Total cost was 375 for the exhaust and valence and 150 labor. You can tell the exhaust sticks out a lot further than normal. I was originally upset, and they offered to fix it, but I said I'd think about it. It's actually growing on me. I actually think I'll stick with it, but not sure yet. Otherwise, this completes the mods for the foreseeable future. |

Just remove the tips and push them in further then weld, I had a similar problem with my 335i MPE. Not as far out as yours but it was enough to look a bit off..

if going with a 335 exhaust makes you feel better on a 328…all the power to you. I still prefer the old school look of a dual on one side of the car.
personal preference. but feeling more "adequate" or inadequate has nothing to do with the rationale. People can call me poor all they want. Hell, my folks purposefully bought a 320 recently. Took a lot of flack for it, but who cares. Parents have a nicer second car, and homes worth way more. It's not about showing your wealth, but enjoying your wealth. Buy what you want, need and can use, not what others perceive you to be. |

I'm sorry you feel people are trying to deceive you, and others by performing this modification, I don't think its the majority's intention. Glad to hear your parents are enjoying their 320 and nice home though. |
