So you had BM3 flashed, and your dealer just wrote the new DME Istep over it, locking it? Did your SA discuss this with you at all prior? They had to have detected that BM3 was installed…

Or did you flash it back to stock prior to bringing it in for the service?

An earlier poster who brought theirs in tune-flash intact stated their dealer overwrote it but they weren’t locked even with a newer supposedly locking istep revision…

I wonder if the late 2015-build 2016 model cars have a DME variant that’s unlockable, but the later 2016/2017 models also affected have a newer lockable DME??

When I had warranty work done on my 2016 last year they locked mine, a 10/15 build. Whether you have the tune or flash back to stock doesn't matter, they simply hook up the car and click update. Keep in mind that some dealers (like mine) don't blink if you have a tune, especially when the SA drives a tuned M2C

pdxpeter got a later i-step (March 21) yet his DME wasn't locked and he was able to flash bm3. Strange that your earlier Feb 21 i-step locked yours, looks like there are some variations within the updates.

I brought my car in tuned and custom programmed. Dealer called and said that there is a tune and that the software update would wipe it out. I agreed and let them proceed. My dealer (Elmhurst BMW) is good about being up front. They didn't say it would lock the DME or anything, but I always assumed that was a possibility. If it matters, Build date on my car is 7/16 or 9/16.

PTF offered to unlock it for free if I just pay shipping costs ($60 total) They are a stand up company with impeccable customer service!! Looks like I'll be without my car for a week, but $60 is really nothing.

BTW, current locked iStep is on F020-21-03-545 The date I posted in the previous comment was pulled from BM3, which may have a different code.

I got this email and it said it would effect my 2016 4 series. Here's the thing though, every time I sign on to use internet/check the weather it always says 4G. So I don't see where this is going to effect me.

If you don't mind, can you share what was upgraded after it's done at dealer? I am interested in specifically what is being upgraded / changed. Thanks!
I don't have a tune, so unfortunately I can't help you there. Part # 84109843931 was installed and the istep is now F020-21-3-545. As far as I can tell, I gained no functionality. The connected store is still "no longer available" as it was before.

Wow. That’s a ~$650 part.

Likely adds connectivity longevity, no other extra features. (BNW Assist, Concierge, and voice support will support the move to 4G from 3G next Feb).

Might be worth the cost trade of a bench unlock? Hmmm…

BMWUSA got back to me today and gave me the story of the providers phasing out the service and that they were giving people with their connected expired after Feb 21 a free year until Feb 22. Maybe the following will help you out.

To ensure you receive the complimentary services, you’ll need to “Update Services” via iDrive. Shipping costs are to ship the DME to and from PTF.

FYI, from the dealer, my car only got a software upgrade. There was no new module installed.

So if I’m grokking this right, it seems there’s at least 2 versions/types of upgrades going on…

Earlier cars (2016) get a HW change plus SW update, and later cars (2017) get a SW-only update.

It’s different for pre-LCI, N-engine models (eg 4 series vs 3 series, N55 DME vs B58 DME).
Are only B-engine DMEs are being locked, N-engine DMEs not with latest I-step here???

That sounds correct. Pretty sure cars with NBT EVO ID4 get hardware + software, and NBT EVO ID5 get software. Both of which had 4G to begin with.

Model Year 2014 and later (except Model Year 2014 X6) & Model Year 2015 and later X6 produced through June 30, 2015 came with a 10-year factory-equipped ConnectedDrive services contract (see page 2 of the Service Availability Matrix updated June 2019.pdf). My ConnectedDrive services are valid until 2024. As of now I have not received information on whether my car is eligible or not eligible for a tech upgrade.

BMW has some FAQs on the 3G sunset. Items 3 and 6 appear to indicate that some cars will receive a free tech upgrade, but BMW is keeping it vague on which cars are eligible.

My BMW dealer has no information on this matter. BMW Assist and BMW Customer Care give scripted answers.

Just got an email from BMW that my 2015 435i Gran Coupe is NOT eligible for an upgrade so I'm screwed on RTTI and other connected services. Anyone know why?

"Unfortunately, for your vehicle, there is not a technology upgrade available that would allow you to continue to use ConnectedDrive/BMW Assist services after the expiration of your contract, or February 2022, whichever occurs first."

-John

*Edited to Add: BMW USA Telephonic support said only about 15% of vehicles affected by this 3G sunset will be eligible for an upgrade. I asked him to note my extreme disappointment and my hope that the geniuses in Munich will figure out how to fix this before February. He said the current message is not the final word on the subject, so I hope everyone else affected calls and registers their disappointment with the "current word."

What is the production date for your car? Do you have a 10-year ConnectedDrive contract?

A friend with 2015 6 series received the same message. Not sure what to make of it?

April 2015 production date. Not sure where to look for the connected drive contract. I've been paying the subscription for two years, so I think it was only free for the first four years.

You can check your subscriptions at the following link https://connecteddrive.bmwusa.com

According to BMW's Service Availability Matrix, most MY2015 cars produced through June 30, 2015 should have a 10-year contract for the same services that I have (see screenshot from the ConnectedDrive website).

Hey has anyone with one of the Android Auto boxes done the upgrade? (I have the Andream unit). I got the upgrade and now my automatic mirror folding does not work anymore. The problem is that Bimmercode won't let you do anything since it realizes the extra module is attached.

Is there a way to get all my settings back without having to open up my dash and uninstall the mmi prime box before using Bimmercode?

Did you have other BimmerCode modifications prior to service? Were they all wiped out?
