The under bonnet recording was taken whilst driving so it was under load most of the time. I think it sounds like a classic diesel

Surely, the easiest test would be to ask your partner or friend to take your car 100 yards up the road then drive past you whilst accelerating to hear how it sounds!?!?! if it clatters and sounds awful then thats what everyone else hears when you drive past and think they are getting a burble but in reality they get a tracter!! Lol? Right i am off to test that!!!

I have my original iPhone recording, one in the engine bay, another exhaust note and two inside the car.

What strikes me is this:

1) Its a diesel
2) There is a ridiculous amount of road and wind noise
3) The sound is most definitely piped in (and not authentic at all!)
Hmm three things stand out there to me:

1) Under the bonnet it has all the classic diesel noises...low speed clatter, lots of turbo whistle on pickup, at higher revs the high pressure injector noise.

2) The in cabin sounds are identical to the M135i.

3) The exhaust sounds like a big diesel.

Ok so no wonder all the 335D drivers are raving about the sound while I'm scratching my head thinking they sound like tractors.

Ah, I thought it was just revving up. I don't really mind either way, saves buying a fancy exhaust

Exactly, what we hear is great - what else matters?

Excellent, post the result please.

My other half told me to '...jog on and get a life...'

At least I know where I stand - she can't drive it properly anyway!

Couldn't care what others hear, if that were the case a tractor sound inside and v8 outside would be ok nope lol

Ok after numerous tests of my wife driving up and down the road looking silly. I can say if it's at an idle pace then it does sound like a tractor but at higher speeds it doesn't sound as pronounced as she her in the car but it doesn't sound that bad at all. Definitely no hint of a clatter but no V8 sound either.

Having taken 640d gran coupe for a spin, I can confirm that 335d has same piped in noise under load.
Makes you smile, mind you took a m235i bout an hour ago what a machine, great value.

There is another test to do - disconnect speakers and then we'll see. Anyway I don't care as it gives a pleasure while driving the car. I was so sceptic changing from petrol to diesel but now I'm happy. And the other thing I'm sure about is the 4 cylinder diesel 3 series is no go for me, yet
