"break in" period for new BMW

I just recently purchased a new 2018 440i which now has about 100 miles on it. I want to try out sport + mode and launch control but it is recommended that the engine and transmission be "broken in" before I do it.

So the obvious question is: how many miles should I put on it before I try out the launch control?

Thoughts?

Per BMW you should keep it below 4K rpm and avoid full throttle launches for the first 1200 miles.

Not anytime soon. I did my first launch on my 440 around 800 miles, but I kept the car under 6k

1200 miles is the BMW guideline. Not that hard to keep to it.

My thought is that you should RTFM. My thought is that you should look in the Mechanical Maintenance: ... BreakIn/... forum where this is discussed. My thought is that you should Search before posting.

My thought is that the others have given you good advice, but I'm a bit cantankerous this morning.

Others will tell you to ignore the break in period.

Because they know better than BMW engineering and research.

I feel you have one opportunity to break in the engine/drivetrain, why not do as the factory says? The 1200 miles go by quickly (haha).

The only thing I did differently is I had the oil changed - at my cost - at about 1800 miles, WITHOUT resetting the maintenance indicator, as I didn’t want the oil sitting in there for 10,000 miles.
