Was it an engine out job ?

You’ve been well and truly bent over. When I’ve bought cabin filters they’ve normally been around £25-ish inc VAT. £169 plus VAT for fitting is absolutely scandalous.

They haven't charged you £7.50 for the copper washer on the sump bung.
Which means they have sucked (some of) the oil out of the engine, so it doesn't need a full refill amount of oil.
Cynical? Me?

That Nano particle filter set part number is here... https://www.sytnerstevenagebmwparts....e/02_0323.html

It reads to me to be all the filters including oil, which they have charged for in the oil service too?? or am I reading it wrong.

It is a climate friendly ecological bio copper washer that's been responsibly sourced by a free range Asian workers

The main differences compared to the service I had on the M135 at my local dealer last August are:

Shell Helix Ultra Extra oil was £12.00/l (ex vat)
The Microfilters for mine were £57.62 (ex vat)
Your labour rates look to be about 6% higher than mine (but this might be a difference between 7/23 and now)

The AW times for each element are identical and, I suspect, set by BMW

That is for a set of filters. Whilst that still makes them expensive, when you add that they're probably only compatible with a 7 and 8 series, it makes the cost a bit more 'realistic' from a main dealer.

I know you've got put up with the grilles/old man image but this is where a 7 series makes sense you get £3500+ worth of servicing as standard.

That sounds pretty reasonable for the iX given that one microfilter change was £235 fitted on the 8. That’s very light brake wear given that you don’t use 1 pedal.

I have bought the same 4 year pack for my Electric Mini for £310.

Just had my service undertaken at BMR Performance in Turners Hill (they are specialist in BMWs).
Second time I've used them for a service, this time:
Oil service,
Microfilter service,
Brake fluid service,
Update online service history.

Parts cost £90.15 (£7.50 for brake fluid, £55.02 for Inspection kit I, £27.63 for 6.5 ltrs of Twin Power 5w30 LL04 oil)
Labour cost £87.00
VAT £35.43
Total £212.58

I recommend them.

Must be good to have a decent local BMW specialist. If I had added a brake fluid change to mine, to make it the same as your service, that would have been £645!

Yes, a good find. They like their classic BMWs, an 850i was backing out as I arrived, emitting a glorious V12 note!

That's what a BMW service should cost! Less than £5 microfilter change at a dealer. Especially good value if they have BMW specific diagnostics and i-drive software, which they will have to pay a subscription for.

My local garage, who charge £45 per hour, do a hydroscopic test on brake fluid before they will replace it. Not sure if it's a diligence thing, or just because brake fluid change is a PITA as it needs two people!

Completely agree - that seems a very fair price. I’m well aware that I’m paying over the odds by using a main dealer. The only question is whether the extra cost is justified in terms of the implied warranty which comes from having a car supplied and maintained by the same people. If I was being charged an extra 50% for the service then I think that would be reasonable. When it gets to 150% it’s definitely more questionable!

I have sold a few cars over the past few years and I can honestly say no-one has ever asked if had a full 'dealer' history; only a full history.

The days of 'implied' provenance for a dealer service history are long gone IMO. When the law changed to allow non-dealers to service cars and retain warranty the game changed IMO.

I have bought a few cars recently aswell and I couldn't care less if it had been serviced at a gold-plated dealership, or Joe's local garage. As long as it had been serviced a lot and have invoices to prove, all good for me!

The implied warranty I’m referring to is the decision for BMW to contribute and at what level, to a failure that occurs outside of the normal warranty period. A BMW service history is one of the factors which goes into making that judgment, as is having bought the car from BMW.

This gets less relevant with the age of the car, but my car is currently under 2 years old and I may keep it until it’s 5 or 6 years old.

I have used the service history as leverage with my previous Mini to have a fairly expensive job carried out under goodwill at about 6 years old.

I may well give them a go; got a service coming up and want a transmission filter and fluid change done. Turners Hill is not a million miles from me although it means running the gauntlet of the potholes between Wych Cross and Sharpthorne

I ran the same gauntlet, as I pass through that area between my place and work. Some of the worst have been filled in recently, but not all.
BMR are well worth a visit.

Not been that way for a while. I got totally fed up trying to dodge the holes and my dentist said that gritting my teeth that hard was not good for me!
Cheers for the headsup.
