He has access to BMW's ASAP, so can download the repair code file from there.

Is it someone in BMW generating the codes?

Nope...the BMW system for generating these codes has been cracked. The codes are generated from your VIN, the map id and a file in your car containing some encrypted info - you need all three to generate the code. Anyone who just needs your VIN, is using BMW's ASAP system to download a repair kit file for your vehicle from BMW.

Nope...no issues at all. The dealer will not know you have updated the maps. In fact, you could downgrade the maps if you really wanted - you don't need a code to install an earlier map version.

So they have access to the BMW online ASAP parts portal to do the recovery?

£29 looks a good price. Is that for NBT?

Yes...how they get access, I am not too sure. I assume they have a friend working in the Service Dept at a dealership.

I have seen someone selling ASAP access too.

Thanks Andy. That means in theory BMW can record the information, however determining who is a genuine user of the ASAP portal may cost more to police than it would save BMW.

Indeed. A lot of the guys who have been selling FSC map codes and have access to the ASAP portal are based outside far away from places like the UK. What BMW makes of a dealer in China requesting a repair code for a UK car would be quite interesting to hear.

But as the car owner, you're not doing anything wrong. BMW don't know you've updated your maps.

I'm guessing that BMW's its not yet at a stage where it can link a request in China to a repair in the UK easily/ cost effectively.
Even if BMW can, the case for whats saved may not stack up, if a few people get cheap NAV updates is it a huge deal for BMW? I think not.
BMW makes the vast majority of its profit selling cars and parts for the cars hence software nav updates may not be big on its hit list.

2014 Updated

Many thanks to AndyH for his help in directing me to the 2014 files and guiding me through the process

For the record, my car is June 2013 build.

I got my code from BMWnavi in the end for £30 (inc delivery ). They took 20 minutes to return my code by email.

So this-afternoon I plugged the USB into the car to see what would happen.

Below is a fairly self-explanatory photo storyboard of the sequence of events. In all, it took pretty much exactly an hour to complete.

Thanks for this Gatsojon. Did you use more than one USB drive? It looks like you may have used 4??? Can this process be completed with one large USB drive instead?
TIA

The 1/4 is due to the map update file having four parts (four folders when you extract it)...is easier just using one 32GB memory stick with the whole update on there.

It actually said 1/4 for the whole update process through to 100% complete. As Andy says, just one 32GB USB from Amazon did the trick for me . I'll save it for next year!

For information I formatted a portable hard disk drive and did the install from the hard drive.
I left the car running for the whole install and it took about 30 minutes.
