I have my work cut out for me - wife smashed her passenger side mirror
Not exactly F30 content, but there is some here actually.
My wife has a '15 X1 xDrive 2.8 M Sport that is Black Sapphire Metallic just like my '15 328 sDrive. I got the call yesterday at 8:45AM "You're going to be pissed..." - thinking "Ugh, no, day care wants us to pick up our son again!?" (He was having bouts of low grade fevers and such). "No, I hit my mirror on a moving truck." Sigh. I had her go back and find the mirror carnage in case something was reusable. I then got pictures: Sigh. So as you can see the mirror folded in which is nice - the cover popped off (and is damaged) and there is some heavy scraping on the glossy lower "M Sport" lower mirror housing cover. The mirror glass is broken clearly. It's leaking and surrounded in a black surround indicating that it is in fact electrochromatic... and like $350. So, I priced out a mirror cover, lower cover, mirror glass, and then started figuring out painting the larger cover. We were looking at around $461 without paint. Paint would add up to about $560 if I did it myself (color matched BSM in a can + 2K Clear). I went out to the X1 to just try adjusting and moving everything - it initially looked good. HOWEVER, I then realized that the mirror power folds and I could hear the motor moving for the tilt of the glass... but that the swively part was not moving in up/down direction although the motor actuator (white) was. Turns out there is a ball end that clips onto the swively part that was broken. No big deal... how bad can th-..... $245 for the "Power drive" PN# 67137266659. Holy hell. Now we're talking almost $800! For a freaking side mirror that I am going to R&R! Then it dawns on me - my F30 and X1 have the same mirrors! I mentioned to my wife hey we could get the M Performance Carbon Fiber covers at this point and I wouldn't have to muck with paint and it'd look cool. She said "Wait why don't you get the CF ones and swap yours to my mirrors since your car has 'more cool stuff on it' and then you won't be as mad at me" lol or something to that effect. Don't have to tell me twice! I found 67137266659 on Ebay for $60 used, ordered the mirror glass new from ECS along with the M Performance Covers and lower M Sport mirror housing cover along with the fancy glass. It totals up to $1010 So moral of the story is if you're going to smash your mirror into something make sure you don't have auto dimming and don't break 67137266659. However, at least I should get OE M Performance CF mirror caps as "cool down bribary" lol. I wasn't actually that mad, just bummed - live and learn. Wife asked after, "So does this mean I can't get gold wheels for my X1?"

Go do some hunting in the junk yard, there are always total lost bmws from rear enders, you'll pay 1/4 of the price from a dealer. From the picture, this side mirror assembly looks identical to any 2/3/4 series of the current gen.

Haha - married coming on 6 years now, if we've learned nothing else it's that we compromise. Usually the result is "Yeah $spouse that's fine whatever you want to buy"
I would, but my time is too valuable. It was this or drop 'er off at the dealer. The dealer we use is super honest, but once I realized a new cover would need to be painted, the M Sport trim is semi unique, the mirror is a all-optioned, and then labor... It's almost the same as what I priced and I am at least getting CF caps. We have an 8 month old son at home and both work full time so finding time (and a yard) to crawl a parts yard is something I haven't been able to do for quite some time. I know, trust me, I'd rather do that - it's more fun, but time is valuable anymore.

Also, tell your wife she can still have gold wheels, but now she gets gravity cast wheels instead of rotary forged or forged

She'll prob still end up getting rotary forged wheels like me lol Quote:
I feel you, I really do. I built the engine/car in my avatar myself - did all my own powder coating... but I pay people for oil changes now I still turn wrenches and such (check my youtube!) but for this kind of thing... I just want it done.

I recall reading either on this board/forum or the other one that the latest models do not have the passenger side mirror with the auto dimming feature.

All is well that ends well!
Her car is sorted out - TIS says you can't replace the motor (pivot thinger) inside the mirror without a whole assembly. Not true. It unclips and has one central screw. That said I pulled the glass out of my car with these (overpriced but genuine) BMW nylon/teflon wedge tools for glass removal: Sketchy because I needed to remove my two mirrors to get the covers off. Then remove one of her mirrors since the other was already missing rofl. Potential to break 3 heated/autodim mirrors All went well though! Compounded and polished the covers off of my car to match the all-new gloss M Sport trim on her car: All mirror/motor functions work - so all good! And... I got the OE M Perf CF ones All parties are happy Happy Easter everyone!

Did you see if you could get the genuine tool off eBay or FCP Euro to avoid paying retail? Seems there could be a hack somewhere mentioned on YouTube to avoid the expensive of having to pay full retail for genuine parts or maybe use not genuine parts for way cheaper especially for a simple wedge tool you will only use once.

I have heard you can pull out the mirror covers without removing the mirrors, in a pretty forceful manner, since there are only plastic clips holding it.
Good thing everything turn out great! I guess time for her gold wheels now? |
