Car sputters under moderate throttle (HPFP issue?)
Around last week, under heavy to moderate acceleration, the car sputters/lags. No CEL is thrown and when I read codes using bootmod3 I don't see any misfire codes or anything like that.
I've been reading around and it may look like a HPFP issue. Can anyone chime in on this? |

I used to have a similar issue after flashes and adaptation resets, and it has since gone away. In my case, I think it was an adaptations issue, as it hasn't happened after I've driven enough to let the car adapt.

This usually is a typical sign of bad plugs. Check your gap on the plugs and/or replace if you are over 70K. Plugs should be done every 40K to 50K MAX. Coils should be changed out around 90K to 100K.
Are you tuned? If tuned for stage 1. Gap the plugs to .025 -.026 If tuned for stage 2. Gap the plugs to .022 -.023

You need to reset your adaptation, I was like you, plugs coils air filter etc. nothing, I'm getting a BMS Pedal Tuner soon and bypassing the stupid drive by wire + adapt system, it sucks. I need to do this reset at least once a week.

My car does this , just dropped it off at the shop. Idles fine , revs Fine in Park but when driving , moderate acceleration will make the engine sputter and make “farting” noise

I had stuttering under the same conditions and did everything others did, coils, plugs, checked everything and also thought it could have been a bad fuel pump/ clogged fuel filter. Ended up changing the trans fluid (I have an 8AT) and it was because bad fluid.
Not sure if you are auto and also what mileage you're at, but if you're past 50k, I'd highly recommend it. After changing the fluid, all stuttering and hesitations went away. Shop that changed it (German specialist) said that the fluid was very dirty and I'll notice a big difference. He was correct. BMW claims it's a "lifetime fluid" but ZF (transmission manufacturer) does not say that and advices it should be changed every 50k miles.

Ok here is an update:
I stopped using Costco and Arco gasoline (91 octane) and I've only been using Chevron, Mobil, or 76 and the entire problem went away. What does this mean? |

Plugs were changed, used different gas and running stock boost. Still had the problem. A few weeks later I brought the car to the dealer due to a wastegate rattle. They replaced the turbo and HPFP (said it was making noise) and the problem disappeared. I don't know which component fixed the issue, but I'm leaning toward the HPFP. |

Try dumping a Techron fuel system cleaner in your tank the next time you need to fill up gas and use 93 octane if available. |

Update: I was using techron complete fuel system cleaner since the issue started, didn't do much.
Two days ago while I was driving, the car started shaking, drivetrain malfunction notification appeared and the check engine light came on. Read the codes using bootmod3 and it was a misfire on cylinder 4. Went to a mechanic and it was diagnosed as needing new coils and injectors. This is covered in California under the SULEV warranty and the dealer will fix it for free. Car is in the shop currently. Got a 2019 G20 330i as a loaner. The technology in the car is really nice, the drive is WAYYYYY smoother than the f30. Steering is really nice as well. This car is bone stock and the power deliver is smooth as fuck but on WOT its not the same feel as the f30. Great car though. |
