N20 and double-vanos, how it works?

Hi,

I have been replacing new timingchain and oilpump chain to my 320i because old plastic guides were in small pieces bottom of the oil pan... When I strated to put engine back together I started to think how this vanos system works?

I have studied manuals and many youtube videos but there are quite a little information about it. My biggest worry now are camshaft adjusters, there are no setup tool for those? Is there any meaning what position those are if sensor wheels are OK?

Pic of adjusters, can I freely select their position?

Answer to myself.

I've read from n20 tecnical info that vanos adjusters have same construction as n55. N55 repair manual tells that adjusters can be assembled freely. So I can assum that system will work fine if sensor wheels are setup correctly.

Still I'm interested If someone have knowledge how this system works.

My understanding is that you do have to set the position using the timing tool before and then after you can just match it back up to the tool and it will be in time if you did everything right.

Not sure exactly which part you are asking about. I see no picture.

But I think the answer is no the position matters because otherwise the sensor will read an untrue position.
